XX [From the introduction] "Fort Bowie, a 19th century U.S. Army post in Apache Pass, the dividing point between the Dos Cabezas and Chiricahua mountains in Arizona, played a distinctive role in the settlement of southern Arizona. It served as one of the major command posts from which the army conducted its campaigns against Cochise, Geronimo, and the Chiricahua Apache tribe from the 1860s through the 1880s. The prominence of the post is attributable primarily to its strategic location. Apache Pass was convenient and frequently was used by travelers on their way to California. More important, the presence of several springs in and around the pass made it one of the few reliable watering holes for many miles. For these reasons, Apache Pass was also the location of one of the way stations for the Butterfield Overland Mail route from 1858 to 1861. The popularity of the pass was appreciated by the Apache, and it was dreaded by travelers as the site of numerous ambushes and depredations. Fort Bowie was officially founded on July 28th 1862, following the Battle of Apache Pass, July 15 - 16, 1861, when the Chiricahua Apache ambushed a contingent of the California Volunteers who were engaged in maneuvers against Confederate forces in Arizona. Under orders of Brigadier General James Carlton, commander of the California Volunteers, 100 men of the 5th California Volunteer Infantry occupied Apache Pass on July 28 and immediately began construction of Camp Bowie. What began as a series of stone breastworks enclosing a number of tents eventually developed into a post comprising 16 stone and adobe buildings, including a sutler's store. The first fort proved inadequate for a variety of reasons, and in February 1868 construction of a new, second fort was initiated just east of the first location. It was during the occupation of this second fort that most of the major events of the later Apache campaigns occurred. It was in 1872 that the peace with Cochise was negotiated and the Chiricahua Reservation established, with its agency located in Apache Pass next to Fort Bowie.
