It was love that kept him moving and developing. It was love that confused him and made him reflect. It was love that shattered him and made him mourn. Yeats¿s experience with love was rich and fulfilling as well as frustrating and devastating. In order to come to a better understanding of Yeats¿s love poetry, we need to take a look into his private life:¿Yeats met the fiery revolutionary [Maud Gonne] in 1889. He fell deeply in love with her and would propose to her in 1891, 1899, 1900, 1901, and 1916. Gonne had no use for Yeats's proposals. However, she did have a use for his talents. Gonne would use Yeats for his ability as an orator. Maud Gonne, dragging him at her heels on nationalist agitations, soon found that he was a natural orator and could easily dominate committees. Maud Gonne would continue to turn Yeats proposals down, yet she continued to be the catalyst for the finest love poetry Yeats would ever create. Gonne would once ask for Yeats's help in London, ending a brief but happy love affair with Olivia Shakespear. Sensing divided loyalty, Shakespear would end the affair and it was shortly thereafter that Lady Gregory would save Yeats from a potentially more tragic end, like the poets of the tragic generation¿ (cf. nadn.navy).Yeats really loved Maud Gonne. She was the love of his life, and still, she would never really react to, let alone return his love. Of course, there are certain obstacles that make this process of mobility more difficult. People from one culture leave their roots and start a new life in a new culture. As a consequence, they are forced to adapt to and to adopt this new culture to a certain extent. This is a very complex progress that is described by cultural studies. Just like any other experience, acculturation can be dealt with in literature. Literature can serve as a mirror that reflects cultural phenomena, human experiences, events in history etc. Literary studies deal with the interpretation of these depictions (or reflections) in literary works. Since literary and cultural studies can partly deal with the same topics, there are interfaces. The focus of this research paper will be on acculturation theories and their application to Sam Selvon's The Lonely Londoners with a further focus on the historical background that is intended to provide a better understanding of the acculturation process Selvon's characters make through. It will also be analyzed how Selvon depicts his characters in their acculturation process, whether he uses stereotypes or a differentiated depiction and which problems the characters have to face. It will be shown in how far literature can reflect cultural phenomena and in how far this could be achieved in The Lonely Londoners.

This genre mainly deals with human beings and their bodies and their relationship to technology and their environment. There is a strong focus on the ¿anxiety over [¿] the technological creation of alternative realities and consequent loss of a stable perceptual ground for reflection¿ (Hotchkiss 19).Cyberpunk started as a subgenre of science fiction dealing with the ¿altering of the human body through pharmaceuticals and electronics¿ (Hotchkiss 19). This topic was quite poplar in the sixties and seventies when parts of the society were very suspicious of totalitarian corporate control. Cyberpunk reached its climax in the mid-eighties again dealing with the interfering of body and mind through ¿protheses, implanted circuitry, cosmetic surgery, genetic alteration, as well as brain- computer interfaces, artificial intelligence, [and] neurochemistry¿ (Hotchkiss 19).As mentioned both eXistenZ and Matrix deal with these virtual realities and their impact on human beings, though in different ways. In this paper I am going to analyze how these transitions between parallel realities are depicted and which effects are created through certain techniques. In den folgenden Ausführungen wird die Meierstochter auf der Grundlage des Zitates von Andrea Fiddy betrachtet, nämlich als aktiv handelnde Figur, der eine zentrale Rolle in der Handlung zukommt. Sie versucht sowohl ihre Eltern, den armen Heinrich als auch den Arzt in Salerno in mehreren Reden von ihrem Vorhaben, sich zu opfern, zu überzeugen. Dabei bedient sie sich bestimmter rhetorischer Strategien und theologischer Argumente, um die Zweifel der anderen Figuren aufzuheben, ihren Widerstand zu durchbrechen und somit schließlich ihren Willen durchzusetzen. Im folgenden werden die sieben Reden des Mädchens analysiert (hier sei bewusst der Begriff Rede verwendet, da die Figuren bis auf die Ausnahme des Gesprächs zwischen Heinrich und dem Mädchen nie in Dialogform miteinander sprechen, sondern mittels Reden und Gegenreden). Hierbei stehen die rhetorischen Mittel sowie die theologischen Argumente im Fokus, mit denen das Mädchen ihren Gesprächspartner versucht zu überzeugen. Diese Analyse wird sich im weitesten mit der Gestaltung der Reden beschäftigen, wobei vereinzelt auf die Motive der Meierstochter hingewiesen werden wird. Da dies jedoch nicht Hauptgegenstand dieser Arbeit ist, soll dies auch nur in einem sehr beschränkten Rahmen geschehen.
