Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. Public spaces are important places in city and urban life. The functions ascribed to public space are broad, ranging from political representation, the possibility of political protest and demonstration, to economic use (such as street markets) and the politics of memory. They are also places where different expectations and interests are negotiated. Public spaces are arenas of social life and interaction, and an irreplaceable characteristic of the European city. In the context of both a growing and increasingly diversified city and a neoliberal urban development model, to what extent can the development processes that manifest in public space still be steered? There are stark differences in the reception of public space, its qualities and accessibility (or lack of), which lead to conflicts between different actors about the conditions of its use. This publication provides a comprehensive overview on theoretical debates, methodological approaches and implementation of public space analyses. Issued without a dust jacket. -- This volume provides a comprehensive analysis of the socio-political impact of migration on public memory across Europe, considering how migration has been represented in different cultural and historical contexts. It examines the relationship between migration and collective memory, exploring how various European countries have portrayed migration in media, public spaces, and educational curricula. Key topics include the role of migration in shaping national and transnational histories, the integration of migration narratives into museums and heritage sites, and the influence of post-colonialism, labour migration, and asylum-seeking on European identity. The book covers the representation of migrants in public discourse, art, and media, with case studies focusing on the UK, France, Austria, and Sweden. These case studies illustrate how migration histories have been commemorated and how migrant experiences are integrated or excluded from national memory. Throughout the chapters, the book explores how migration has influenced cultural identity, national memory, and immigration policies in different European contexts, providing a broad view of how migration continues to shape Europe today.…
