Octavo, softbound (stiff, lime green illustrated wrappers), vii, 585 pp. Fine. Sir Peter H. Buck (Te Rangi Hiroa), Director of Bishop Museum from 1936 until his death on December 1, 1951, was a remarkable man. Son of a Maori chiefess and an Irish father, he was born in Urenui, New Zealand, August 15, 1880. In a career marked by achievement, he served variously as physician, public servant, elected representative, teacher, administrator, and research scholar. His contributions to Pacific ethnology are those for which he is most noted, but his experience and accomplishments in other fields afforded an unparalleled richness of background which made his anthropological eminence possible. Arts and Crafts of Hawaii was Sir Peter's final scholarly contribution, culminating a prolific career of similar interest and publication dating from his first ethnological paper on the Maori art of weaving, published in 1911. Dr. Buck concentrated on Polynesian arts and crafts because he felt this was a neglected field. Contents: Houses: Introduction; Kinds of habitations: Houses without walls, Houses with stone walls, Gable roof with thatched walls, Wooden framework, Hipped-roof house, Houses on piles, Lanais, Doors, Thatch, Household equipment, Kukui-nut candles, Stone lamps. Hawaii, Architecture, Americana, U.S.-iana, Polynesian bslic.

Octavo, stiff brown printed wrappers (softbound), iii + 133 pp. Very Good, with wear to head of spine. From Introduction: The occupation of Micronesia and other Pacific territories by the Untied States forces as a result of the defeat of Japan has opened up prospects for conducting research in the Pacific on a wider and perhaps more comprehensive scale than was previously possible. With this in mind, the National Research Council, the Social Research Council, and the American Council of Learned Societies cooperated in the formation of a committee consisting of Dr. Wilmot H. Bradley, Dr. Austin H. Clark, Dr. John W. Coulter, and Dr. Mortimer Graves. The committee met in Washington on August 11, 1944 and approved a statement which planned an appraisal of the work done in the four following fields: earth sciences, biological sciences, social sciences, and the humanities. The first unit of the appraisal was to cover Polynesia, and later units were planned to include Melanesia, Micronesia, the Philippines, and possibly Indonesia. Dr. Coulter, who was appointed chairman of the survey and editor of the social science papers, invited me to prepare an appraisal of anthropology in Polynesia. The material was so extensive that, in order to do it justice, my report far exceeded the form of appraisal which the committee had in mind. As a large portion of the report deals with details concerning the intensive regional survey of anthropology in Polynesia conducted by Bishop Museum, the Trustees of the Museum have decided to publish the report independently, as a contribution to the survey. Contents include: Polynesia, The Polynesians, European Explorers of the Pacific, European Discoveries in Polynesia, Later Writers, Bishop Museum: Ethnological work, Affiliation with Yale University, The Tanager Expedition, The Whippoorwill Expedition, The Kaimiloa Expedition, The Rockefeller Foundation, Bishop Museum staff expeditions, The American Museum of Natural History, Field work in Hawaiian archaeology, Bishop Museum visiting Professor to Yale, The University of Hawaii, Miscellaneous publications.; Literature on Polynesia, Polynesian outliers in Melanesia, Conclusions South Pacific, Polynesia, Anthropology, Hawaii, Easter Island, New Zealand, Samoa, Tonga, Ellice Islands, Uvea, Futuna, Alofi zslic.

Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. Vikings of the Sunrise ranks as a masterpiece of Pacific studies. From the pen of one of the greatest Maori thinkers and writers of his generation, the settlement of the Pacific Ocean comes to life. The book ranges across the Pacific Ocean and the people who populated it, considering their physical and spiritual origins, and the ships they built to conquer this vast territory. It weighs evidence for different routes, retells myths of migration including the Maui series, recounts the author's visits to islands and atolls across the South Pacific, and overall establishes the 'vikings' of the Pacific among the greatest-ever ocean voyagers. First published in 1938, Vikings of the Sunrise is here reproduced in an enhanced facsimile edition, including photos and maps compiled by the author on his voyages, and a new foreword by anthropologist Paora (Paul) Tapsell. Oratia Books is pleased to bring Vikings of the Sunrise back into print for modern readers as part of our NZ Classics series. The author Te Rangi Hiroa (Sir Peter Buck, 18771951) led a busy and distinguished life - variously as an MP, leader of the Young Maori party, doctor, medical officer for Maori health, anthropologist and director of the Bishop Museum, Hawai'i. He was knighted in 1946 for services to science and literature. His best-known books are Vikings of the Sunrise and The Coming of the Maori - One of the greatest accounts ever of Pacific settlement- Author ranks as one of the leading thinkers of his generation- Facsimile edition with new preface in New Zealand Classics series Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
