Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Second Edition. LONDON : March 1893. [ First issued in Jan 1893.]. This is the first printing in seperate form; first appeared in volume one of Law's Works in 1762. Series : The Westminster Library. Hardback. Preface & Introduction. Dark olive green pebble-grained cloth spine and corners. Lighter green smooth cloth sides. Gilt lettered spine and cover: 'William Law's Defence of Church Principles'. Gilt Episcopal shield to cover { repeated to title-page }. Title on half-title: 'William Law's letters to the Bishop of Bangor'. Original dark brown end-papers. Untrimmed edges as issued. Ex College Library with minimal markings. Minor wear only and slight dulling overall. GOOD. 344 pages. Includes bibliographical references. BENJAMIN HOADLY (1676-1761) was an English clergyman, who was successively Bishop of Bangor of Hereford, of Salisbury, and finally of Winchester. He is best known as the initiator of the Bangorian Controversy. These letters are in reply to Hoadly's sermon; delivered on 31 March 1717 to George I of Great Britain on 'The Nature of the Kingdom of Christ'. His text was John 18:36, 'My kingdom is not of this world,' and from that Hoadly deduced, supposedly at the request of the king himself, that there is no Biblical justification for any church government of any sort. He identified the church with the kingdom of Heaven-it was therefore not of this world, and Christ had not delegated His authority to any representatives. **Will be well-packed for posting/shipping**. 8vo. [ Rosley Books for Antiquarian books, CHS, Cumberland, Everyman, GKC, Inklings, Keswick, Literature, MacDonald, Rarities, Theology and History. ].

"HOADLY, Benjamin (1676 1761). The True, Genuine, Tory-Address. To which is added, An Explanation of Some Hard Terms now in use: for the Information of all such as Read, or Subscribe, Addresses. London: A. Baldwin, 1710. Folio (12 4/8 x 8 inches). Single leaf, printed on both sides (disbound, browned, edges a bit creased). An early Whig shot in a debate over the Tory addresses promoted in the summer of 1710 to try to persuade Queen Anne to dissolve the parliament that had impeached Dr. Henry Sacheverell (1674-1724), Church of England clergyman and religious controversialist, whose incendiary sermon "The Perils of False Brethren", had reignited controversy over the legitimacy of the revolution of 1689. "A sermon given to the lord mayor, aldermen, and council of London in St Paul's Church on 5 November 1709 was considered too subversive to be ignored. Such sermons normally took the opportunity to compare the Gunpowder Plot with the landing of William of Orange on 5 November 1688 as a double deliverance from popery. Instead Sacheverell compared the plot not with the revolution of 1688 but with 30 January 1649, the day on which Charles I was executed; both were: indelible monuments of the irreconcilable rage and bloodthirstiness of both the popish and fanatick enemies of our Church and Government These TWO DAYS indeed are but one united proof and visible testimonial of the same dangerous and rebellious principles these confederates in iniquity maintain. (Sacheverell, The Perils of False Brethren, 1974, 3). He thus turned the anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot into an attack upon Catholics and dissenters" (W. A. Speck for DNB). Both Whigs and Tories published guides to how key words in the Tory addresses should be defined, using the terminology of dictionaries when they described "hard words". Whig cleric Benjamin Hoadly published this tract, as here, and many others similarm in which satirizes a Tory address and then picks out key terms such as 'antimonarchical principles', 'hereditary right' and 'republican principles' in order to define them. A Tory reply, by Sacheverell's ally Joseph Trapp, was immediately issued as a "The True Genuine Modern Whigg-Address, to which is added an explanation of some hard terms now in use. offering alternative explanations for the same terms". [Bangorian Controversy] FIRST EDITION. Octavo (20 x 13cm), pp.[2] xvi; 342 [4]. With some woodcut head pieces and other vignettes to preliminaries. Very fine contemporary polished, panelled and speckled calf, with raised bands and gilt titles to spine. All edges speckled red. Repairs to hinges, and a blank label covering a bookplate or ownership on the front pastedown. Toning to edges, and a little light spotting to endpapers, otherwise a crisp, clean example. Boards bumped to corners; spine toned, rubbed and cracked, with split joints. Head cap pulled away. A fine example of eighteenth-century binding, the boards appearing particularly fresh. Very good. A later salvo in the Bangorian Controversy, which began with a sermon preached by Hoadly in March 1717 denying the authority of any clergy to pronounce excommunication, and by extension the authority of any established Church, quoting John 18:36, "My kingdom is not of this world." A war of pamphlets immediately commenced, and though Hoadly was quickly condemned by a Convocation of the Church of England, King George I dismissed the report before any sanctions could be imposed.
