Title page at front, and final plate at rear, have tearing around staples, but are not loose. A collection of four early works by Olaf Holtedahl, published in Oslo between 1911-1914. Rubbing, edgewear and mild staining to covers. Remainder of small paper label to lower spine. Age toning to endpapers. Typed index to four works tipped in to front free-endpaper. Pennsylvania binder's label to rear pastedown. Otherwise, a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked - of this scarce set of early original articles by Olaf Holtedahl (1885-1975), an important Norwegian geologist. He was senior lecturer at the University of Oslo in 1914, and Professor of geology there from 1920 to 1956, and was among the last of a generation of geologists that mastered the subject in all its breadth. He delivered a significant contribution, not only in Norway but also for large areas of the Arctic and Antarctic. His first geological work dealt with the Oslo Rift for the Cambrian, Ordovician and Silurian geological periods (545 to 417 million years ago), and he was part of the 1909-11 expeditions to Svalbard. From 1914-17 he explored Lapland geology. In 1918, he worked at Bear Island. In 1921 he led a Norwegian expedition to Novaya Zemlya and was with Lars Christensen's Antarctic expeditions 1927-28, and edited their scientific results. ~VVV~.
