Buch
Softcover. Zustand: As New. Howard Ruede was twenty-two years old in March of 1877 when he rode on a freight wagon into Osborne City, a community in west-central Kansas. A young man of courage, common sense, and independence, Ruede was filled with the optimism and determination typical of the men and women who took up the challenge of homesteading on the prairie.Brought together by economist John Ise and first published in 1937, Sod-House Days is a collection of the letters Ruede wrote to his family in Pennsylvania chronicling his first year in Kansas. In minute detail these letters show the hard, wearying work faced by homesteaders in the 1870s, their almost unbelievable poverty, the hardships of poor food, inadequate clothing, crowding, unsanitary conditions, the lack of decent drinking water, the bedbugs and fleas, flies and mosquitoes. We see Ruede struggling to stay out of debt, walking miles to pick up the mail or to visit a neighbor, working until his bare feet are rubbed raw by the wheat stubble of the fields, going without meat because he hasn't been able to kill a jackrabbit, cooking biscuits in a kettle over his sod fireplace. Taken together, his observations constitute a careful and graphic picture of the pioneer community in which he lived, one that joins recent studies such as Sandra Myres's Westering Women and the Frontier Experience in presenting an accurate, if brutal, picture of life on the western frontier.

Buch
Trade Paperback. Zustand: Near Fine. Paperback Reprint. 248 Pages Indexed. This is a paperback reprint of the 1937 copyright with a new 1983 twenty-one page Foreword. Covers show very minor corner and edge wear and a small crease on back cover. There is a paste-on The Old West - Abiene Kansas on the front cover. Interior text pages are flawless. Howard Ruede's letters were collected by John Ise, while Ise was studying pioneer life in the late 1920s in Osborne County, Kansas. Ise used several different kinds of materials in assembling the collection. Part of what we have here consists of letters written by Ruede to friends and relatives back home in Pennsylvania. These letters, some of which were published in his hometown newspaper, were written during the first year of Ruede's homesteading efforts; in them he tried to explain the reality of pioneer life for others who were contemplating a move west. Ise also took materials from the Osborne County Farmer, a small newspaper for which Ruede set type and wrote. Ruede had expanded some of his original letters and notes and had published them in the Farmer. Ise then edited the letters, eliminating what he considered to be personal matters and combining materials from the Farmer with Ruede's letters to his friends and family in Pennsylvania. When Ise was preparing his own classic Sod and Stubble, published in 1936, a year before Sod-House Days came out, he drew on materials such as Ruede's interviews with Ise's mother and with people from Osborne County, as well as on articles in the Farmer. Ise's family had pioneered near what is now the town of Downs, Kansas, only a few miles from Howard Ruede's claim. Ise's book and Ruede's letters enrich one another touching on the same themes. This book is a moving account of life on the American frontier.
