This Folio Society Deluxe Limited Edition of "The Toilers of the Sea", the first with the author's original illustrations, has been printed on Veltique Ivory Paper by Memminger Mediencentrum, Memmingen, and bound by Lachenmaier, Reutlingen, in Indian goatskin leather with printed cloth sides. It is limited to 1250 numbered copies, of which this is number 682. Quarter leather pictorial cloth boards, bound-in silk ribbon for page marker, Solander box (aka clamshell case) with gilt lettering on spine and color illustration on front panel, gilt top edge. xxviii, 446 pages with 36 color illustrations by the author, translation and notes by James Hogarth, introduction by Graham Robb, foreword by Andrew Graham-Dixon. Book is in fine condition. Unmarked and clean with bright, crisp pages. Binding tight/sturdy/square, corners and edges sharp. Exterior looks new. Case also in fine condition. If there were any noticeable flaws I'd mention them. A superb production of a book that has been stored in its original shipping box and remains in fine condition. Quarter bound in Indian goatskin with printed cloth sides from original illustration by Hugo. 36 vibrant color illustrations done by Hugo and placed per his original intentions. Unread copy is quite Fine in crisp edges brown xloth solander case with tipped on color plate and titles to spine side. Perhaps a whisper of dust outline to the front side of the case. First edition thus, hardcover with Indian goatskin leather spine with printed cloth sides and top edge gilt, and is marked limited no. 927/1520 on the colophon at the front. The book has a small lean starting to the binding, a tiny spot of dried binders glue at the head of the spine, and a hint of wear to the cover corners. Otherwise, this is a solid, tight, clean Very Good+ copy in a like clamshell box, which has some mild rubbing to the panels, and a hint of shelfwear to the corners and the tail edges.
