Während die einen ihn zum Vorreiter der modernen Demokratie erheben, wird er von anderen als Wegbereiter des Absolutismus und des Totalitarismus verteufelt. Diese unterschiedlichen Standpunkte sind vornehmlich der Gegensätzlichkeit seiner beiden Hauptwerke- Il Principe und Discorsi- geschuldet. Il Principe lässt Machiavelli aufgrund der enthaltenen machtpolitischen Erwägungen, der Glorifizierung Cesare Borgias und der Legitimation von Gewalt gegenüber Untertanen und politischen Gegnern als einen Berater skrupelloser Machtpolitiker erscheinen. Discorsi, hingegen, zeigt ihn als aufrechten Republikaner, der das Volk vor den Machenschaften der Fürsten warnt und Hinweise zur Verteidigung gibt. Trotz der gegensätzlichen Thematik und Zielsetzung ist beiden Schriften eins gemeinsam- die Rolle die Machiavelli der christlichen Religion beimisst. Was in Il Principe nur anklingt wird in Discorsi ausführlicher behandelt. Er entwickelt das Konzept einer Republik, nach dem antiken Vorbild der Römischen Republik, in der die menschliche Vernunft (virtú) das höchste Gut ist. Sie löst die Religion als Herrschaftslegitimation ab und macht sie stattdessen zu einem politischen Instrument.3 Dieser Aspekt seiner Theorie ist in der Forschung bisher nur relativ oberflächlich betrachtet worden, da die meisten Autoren in erster Linie Machiavellis Republikbegriff, seiner Theorie der Staatsraison oder die Kontoverse um die Rezeption des Fürsten thematisieren. Dabei sind Machiavellis Ansätze im Hinblick auf die noch bevorstehende Reformation und die spätere Entwicklungen im Zeitalter der Aufklärung besonders bemerkenswert. Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Frage, inwiefern man in den Schriften Niccoló Machiavellis von einer Säkularisierung der Politik sprechen kann.
