Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Barbara Hulanicki tells the story of the rise and fall of the tiny, chaotic boutique that grew into a vast emporium and epitomised Swinging London. The Biba store was to become an icon of hip 60s and 70s London and a hangout for artists, film stars and rock musicians, including the Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Twiggy, Brigitte Bardot and Marianne Faithful. But in the early 1970s, Hulanicki and her husband Stephen Fitz-Simon lost control after a series of bitter boardroom struggles and for Barbara, Biba was lost. This lively autobiography evokes the adventurous spirit of the 1960s and describes an extraordinary life with clarity and wit. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Erstausgabe
First Edition. Barbara Hulanicki, founder of the Biba fashion house, was the woman who popularised the miniskirt, brought celebrity fashion to the high street, and rewarded working women by selling gorgeously decadent clothes and accessories at prices they could afford. Her gorgeous mail-order catalogues feature an extremely early shoot by the young Helmut Newton, classically atmospheric work by Sarah Moon, stunningly debauched images by James Wedge, and playfully by Harri Peccinotti; designed by John McConnell with drawings by Moira MacGregor. The Biba newspaper, "Welcome to the new Biba", was published to celebrate the opening of Biba's new department store in Kensington, London in the September of 1973. Infused with style, informed by Art Nouveau, and inspired by Sarah Bernhardt, the grand Biba department store offered "the kind of very feminine clothes she [Bernhardt] might enjoy if she had lived in London now, instead of Paris then." A stylish and beautiful archive of iconic vintage fashion mail-order catalogues and photography. The apex of cool. The Biba newspaper, with James Wedge poster centrefold, plus three vintage advertising booklets: all first editions. Newsprint measures 32 x 43cm, 16pp, with sepia plates, some embrowning. Folios measure 36 x 18cm, 16pp each, gilt-decorated wrappers, seven large fold-outs, sepia plates throughout, small creasing and occasional rubbing to corners. With one original, decorated, mail- order envelope (torn), and two separate mail order forms. Very good condition overall. Rare.
