Hurel nous fait découvrir ce passé tumultueux dans son livre, paru en 1885, que nous rééditons en partie.L'auteur évoque les premiers temps du bourg et la construction du château féodal, détruit en 1378 sur le conseil de Duguesclin, pour anéantir l'influence anglaise dans la région. Malgré le rattachement à la couronne en 1335, les habitants de Tinchebray furent longtemps sous la domination des comtes de Mortain et des Anglais, jusqu'à la création du baillage en 1638. Châtellenie sous Henri III, le domaine deviendra vicomté en 1717. Mais surtout, la ville sera un haut lieu de la résistance chouanne et le théâtre de terribles combats, de 1795 à 1800, sous la direction de Louis de Frotté.J.-M. Hurel replace avec une grande vérité chaque personnage et chaque événement dans son contexte historique, et fait de cette étude un document de référence qui passionnera tous les amateurs d'histoire locale.
