Fertility Analysis. 5. Plant Analysis. 6. Physical Properties. 7 Toxic Elements, Greenhouse Gases and Miscellaneous. 8 Microbiological Properties of Soil. References and Further Reading. Annexure. Land, water and plants are of crucial importance to the mankind. While per capita availability of land and water is decreasing due to burgeoning population, degradation is resulting in declining productivity per unit of these resources. This degradation is impacting the environment and the quality of the field crops consumed by the humans and the animals raising serious concerns on the health of the consumers. A concerted effort is being made to keep track of the health of these resources by Central Water Commission, Central Pollution Control Board and many state government agencies through limited monitoring networks. Soil/water health cards are being distributed to the farming community to keep track of the health of these resources. Many of these agencies feel handicapped not only in soil, water and plants analysis but also in interpreting the analytical results for practical use. It is especially true for the salt affected soils and waters, which require special attention and management to achieve potential productivity. The current book compiles and puts together the most important aspects of the existing knowledge on sampling procedures and physical, chemical and biological determinations needed to monitor the soil health and water quality. Besides procedures of general interest in agriculture, all analysis procedures needed for the reclamation and management of salt affected soils and/or poor quality waters have been included. Unlike other books of this nature, the current book includes sections where exhaustive interpretations of the analytical results and/or their applications have been given, in many cases with relevant examples. The readers, therefore, would be able to understand and proceed from the most preliminary step of taking soil/water samples to most advanced analytical techniques to diagnose the problems and to take appropriate measures to reverse the degradation processes. We believe that this book is an improvement over the existing books and is a useful addition to the literature on this subject. The information contained in this book would facilitate the access to and implementation of the knowledge by the scientists engaged in research in the basic streams and agricultural sciences. It would also prove to be a useful reference book to professional students and personals engaged in the NGOs and the state laboratories associated with soil, water and plant analysis work.

Glossary. The course work for various degree programs are constantly revised and or new courses added so that the future teachers, researches and planners are able to face the new emerging challenges. The environmental concerns of irrigated agriculture in the form of water logging and soil salinity are expanding and impacting food grains production. These challenges are commonly articulated at various forums. Thus, reclamation, management and crop production practices of waterlogged salt affected soils have been introduced as a subject in agricultural and agricultural engineering colleges. Since there is a general lack of a good textbook on this subject, authors have attempted to fill this gap through the current publication titled `Crop Production in Salt Affected Soils´. It comprehensively deals with the fundamentals of land reclamation principles and crop production practices. It has been divided into 16 Chapters. The book begins with general introduction comprising of categorization of salt affected soils, extent and distribution and nature and physical, chemical and biological properties. Other chapters includes basic information on on-farm land development, hydrology, irrigation practices, drainage methods, leaching, soil salinization, chemical amendments, and new innovative techniques including agronomic and cultural practices related to land reclamation. Crop production practices for select cereal, oil seeds, sugar, fiber and forage, green manure crops, grasses and forest plantations are also included. Chapter sixteen covers the economic evaluation and social issues involved in land reclamation programs. A Glossary of terms has been added for quick overview of the terms used in the book. The textbook designed and developed for the undergraduate/post graduate students of agricultural/agricultural engineering has been profusely illustrated so that students are able to visualize the processes and phenomena being dealt with. Besides serving as a text book, it will prove to be a handy resource book to conduct specialized training programs on land reclamation. We believe that the book will find its due place in the shelves of students and teachers, field functionaries and college libraries of state agricultural universities and civil engineering colleges. Glossary of Terms. Objective Type Questions and Answers. References. Subject Index. Declining water quality resulting from increasing human population, expansion of industrial and agricultural activities, and projected climate change is a major global issue of concern of the 21st century. UN's Sustainable Development Goal 6 has brought water quality issues to the forefront. The Goal 6 briefly states that international communities should strive to achieve universal and equitable distribution of safe drinking water. It urges communities to reduce water pollution, minimize release of hazardous chemicals and protect and restore water quality ecosystems. Contrarily, ecosystems are being mercilessly polluted. In fact, water pollution has now turned out to be one of the major causes of water inadequacy because it makes the water unfit for its intended uses. Nonetheless, a ray of hope is emerging in the academic world. Subjects related to environment and water quality are being introduced at school, undergraduate and post graduate levels to sensitize the people at the young age. Such an exercise will also help in equipping the future human resource for taking up the challenging issues of water quality. In this context 5th Dean's committee constituted by Indian Council of Agricultural Research has framed several courses on water quality to be taught to the students of agricultural engineering, agriculture, and horticulture. This books deals with the theory and laboratory exercises of one such course namely "The water quality pollution and management".

The current book compiles and puts together information on extent and distribution of poor quality waters in various states of India, their characteristics highlighting the problems likely to be encountered and principles and practices of using poor quality waters in agriculture. Special emphasis has been placed on the use of domestic and industrial wastewaters. Only scientifically managed systems can avoid pollution of land and water resources and serve as a free resource to poor farmers for earning their livelihood. We firmly believe that the information contained in this book would facilitate the access to and implementation of the knowledge by the irrigation engineers, scientists engaged in research in the basic streams and agricultural sciences. It would also prove to be a useful reference book to professional students and personals engaged in the NGOs, who often encounter questions on the management of saline and waste waters. (jacket).

Survival of the mankind is intricately linked to healthy soil - a finite non-renewable resource. On the one hand per capita availability of this resource is decreasing because of increasing population, on the other large areas are being degraded. It is not only impacting production and productivity but also has serious environmental implications. While physical, chemical and biological properties together determine the quality of soils, testing soils for their physical properties has become an integral part of the assessment of soil degradation and design management strategies to maintain or improve soil quality. In fact, success of any research or management program in Natural Resource Management rests on testing soil physical properties. Soil physics, a branch of soil science that studies soil physical properties and processes, applies the basic principles of physics, physical chemistry, engineering, and meteorology to resolve practical problems in agriculture, ecology, and engineering. 'S0il Physical Properties: Standard Methods of Laboratory and Field Investigations and a State-of-the-Art compendium on measurement methods of soil physical properties. It is a companion publication of a previous publication of the authors titled Standard Methods for Analysis of Soil Plant and Water . The motivation to prepare this book has come from the fact that a number of manuals are available to address the need of soil chemical analysis but only a handful talk about soil physical properties that too only in a sketchy manner. The compendium is divided into l5 well-defined chapters, each chapter dealing with few interrelated properties. The procedures described in this manual reflect the current knowledge on soil physical tests. In most cases, more than one method of determination is included enabling the technicians and researchers to make a knowledgeable decision while choosing a particular method. A new feature of the manual includes guidelines values of various soil properties. It should help the analysts and readers to be able to interpret the results and make sound recommendations. The manual has been compiled keeping in view the need primarily of agricultural, engineering and environmental sciences laboratories. The author earnestly hope that the information contained in this book will be helpful to the technical staff of the soil testing laboratories in doing their day-to-day analytical work. Teachers, researchers, research students, field scientists and practicing engineers especially in the agriculture, engineering and environmental science streams will find this as a handy reference and text book for practical classes.
