"The brief to write a book on Adventure and the Cinema can be interpreted in any number of ways. As adventure movies do not form a neatly definable genre, the one approach which seemed unrewarding was the straight historical survey. Instead I have tried to use the central theme of adventure as a peg on which to hang an assortment of observations about the cinema. The problem of writing in a general way about the cinema is the medium's combination of vast output with (for an art form) a very short timespan: so much has happened simultaneously that almost any generalization works only for a narrow sector of production -- one only has to stray slightly outside this sector to be overwhelmed with exceptions. The book's tentative conclusions need to be seen within these limits. A number of sections are adapted from articles by me in Movie; the interview material with Richard Brooks and Howard Hawks is also taken from Movie. Books quoted are 'Film as Film' by V.F. Perkins, 'The Best Remaining Seats' by Ben M. Hall, 'Alan Dwan' by Peter Bogdanovich and 'Politics and Film' by Leif Furhammer and Folke Isaksson.' - Ian Cameron" - from the copyright page. "Adventure and action are the mainspring of a multitude of films, sometimes providing the basis for the whole story and sometimes highlighting the suspense. Adventure is about swashbuckling sword fights and dramatic final shoot-outs as well as Glenn Miller's search for the 'Sound'. But adventure is not only about people, it is also about extravagant, fantastic sets and locations in exotic, faraway places. Ian Cameron draws these diverse threads together to form a comprehensive picture of adventure in the movies." - from the inner front jacket flap.
