Bright, beautiful illustrations throughout. From jacket: Tilda thought she'd burst with excitement if Christmas didnt' come soon! Buch Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. DRIVE SLOWLY- SIX DOGS 1953 1st edition by Ilse Bischoff Red boards with gold-color dog pictorials and lettering, 162 pp., 8 dog photos published by Viking Press VG "some cloth wear, minor marks, spots, edge rubbing, inside is clean and tight" This is the true story of how one dog led to another - not entirely by the usual method of procreation, but by reason of Ilse Bischoff's somewhat belated acceptance of the fact that the dog is man's best friend and most enchanting companion. It began with the author's casual promise to a friend to bring him home from Europe a small dachshund. This was Pumpernickel, a sickly runt puppy selected by sympathy rather than by knowledge. at the end of the transatlantic crossing Pumpernickel was no longer intended for the friend but for the Bischoff household. It proved a herculean task to keep the little fellow alive, but by doing so the author learned a lot about dogs and decided that if one was wonderful another would be doubly so. Thus came Rosie. The third dog was an irresistible poodle named Coco, who led to the author's dream of establishing a breeding kennel on her Vermont summer place. Coco's first litter of three was born, and the customers came; but they bought no puppies, because suddenly the puppies were not for sale. And there was no more talk of a kennel. Life with six dogs is bound to create unforeseeable complications, you learn a lot about dog psychology, and you have to be prepared for anything. The many incidents of the story range from pure comedy to high drama - with even a bit of terror. Its appeal, despite Miss Bischoff's devotion to her animals, lies in its lack of false sentimentality, and in the dogs' emergence, one by one, as personalities. Dog-lovers will find this an enchanting addition to the list of "dog books" they like to read and press upon dog-minded friends.

Ilse Bischoff (1901-1990) was an illustrator and writer. Born in Germany, she had studied art in Munich. Immigrating to the United States, she studied at the Art Students League in New York City. THE NEW YORK TIMES reported that she illustrated 12 books, published from 1928 and 1946. She wrote two novels about George Washington's portraitist, Gilbert Stuart: PROUD HERITAGE (1949) and PAINTER'S COACH (1943). Her autobiography (offered here) was titled DRIVE SLOWLY: SIX DOGS (1953). That same year, a children's book she wrote and illustrated, THE WONDERFUL POODLE, was published? Her work is represented in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New York Public Library, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Hood Museum at Dartmouth.
