In her 22-page Introduction, bookseller / bibliographer Stern explains how -- by researching the hand-written correspondence between Alcott and her publishers (two of which letters are reproduced here in facsimile) -- she uncovered the pen names (usually "A.M. Barnard") under which the author of "Little Women" wrote several previously unacknowledged "gaudy and gruesome" Gothic thrillers for magazine syndication during the 1860s. Four of the tales (running from about 50 to 100 pp.) are reprinted here for the first time in more than a century. Includes "Pauline's Passion and Punishment." 277 pp. Reduced from $130.
