Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. "Randolph Bourne" by Louis Filler, combines biography and critical analysis, as the author presents a study of one of the key literary figures of the early twentieth century. Randolph Bourne was not just a literary figure, he was also a trenchant social thinker, and pacifist - speaking out against World War I, and decrying Anglo-Saxon centrist attitudes in the United States. He championed immigration, in that he felt the United States would be stronger if it and celebrated immigrant cultures and embraced multi-culturalism - although I do not think that phrase was in current use back then; one essay of his was titled "Trans-National America". His writings were influential, and continue to have a positive influence on progressive thinkers. Here is the cover blurb: " 'Randolph Bourne' is a study of the man who became the intellectual leader of protest against American intervention in World War I ? America's Romain Rolland and Bertrand Russell ? The man who, in Carl Van Doren's words , 'said peace and meant peace'. To his friend Van Wyck Brooks, the writer-philosopher was the 'flying wedge of the younger generation' of pre World War I America. He was the brilliant spokesman of those idealistic poets, artists and moralists who experimented in art and life, and aspired toward a non-conformist civilization richer and healthier than the America they knew.
