The inscription reads: 'Inscribed with love to you and Pete by the author, Irwin F. Cortelyou, October 27, 1955.' This book was previously owned by Pete Street and his first wife Narcissa Vanderlip Street. Pete Street was the son of the author Julian Street. The Streets lived two towns over from me. The co-author, Irwin F. Cortelyou, was a writer and art historian who lived most of her life in Rumson, New Jersey. In 1922, she married George Bruce Cortelyou, Jr., son of the former U.S. Treasury Secretary from Theodore Roosevelt's administration. 'In 1949, Irwin F. Cortelyou began to research the works of the painter Ezra Ames, at first as a favor for a friend, as she attempted to locate a companion portrait for two Ames portraits that he owned. As she was doing this, she was encouraged to research further and to undertake the task of compiling the first catalogue of Ames' works. Her research led her to Theodore Bolton, an art historian and writer for the New-York Historical Society. Bolton directed her to the Albany Institute of History and Art, which owned Ames' account book, a document that became one of her most valuable research tools in collecting and verifying information about Ames and his works. Later in 1949, Bolton joined her as a collaborator though Cortelyou still conducted most of the research. From 1951 to 1952, the two wrote three articles about Ames' life and works for the New-York Historical Society Quarterly. In 1956 (actually 1955), these articles were revised and expanded and, along with the addition of a bibliography and a catalogue of over five hundred of Ames' paintings, were published by the New-York Historical Society in a single work titled Ezra Ames of Albany. In 1957, a supplement to the catalogue was published.' This sale does not include the separate supplement. The book is in wonderful condition. You can see the covers in the photos. The gilt lettering on both the front and on the spine is nicely bright. There's just a little bit of the typical crinkling at the spine ends. The cover edges are in excellent shape. The cover corners look very good. There is just one tiny spot of rub-through at each of the two rear corners. There is a little thin crease just above the front bottom corner. The page edges are very clean. The book is square and the spine is straight. The book is a thick 398 pages. Nevertheless, it is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. These pages are exceptionally clean. Scrolling through I haven't found any instances of soiling. There are no placeholder creases. The last few pages of the Index have a small bottom corner crease. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. And the co-author's signed inscription represents the only writing to be found anywhere. There are a good number of reproductions of the artist's portraits. They are all in excellent condition. Inscribed by Author(s).
