Es lag schon 1930 gedruckt vor, wurde aber vom Autor zurückgehalten, weil es erst nach Freuds Tod (den der Text als bereits geschehen imaginiert) erscheinen sollte. 1932 erfuhr die psychoanalytische Vereinsführung von seiner Existenz und versuchte, es zu unterdrücken. Nach 1933 wurde die ganze Auflage vernichtet. 2004 tauchte dann doch ein Exemplar auf - in einer japanischen Bibliothek. Sadger, ein Freud-Schüler der ersten Stunde, erzählt von den wenig glanzvollen Anfängen Freuds, bringt Anekdoten aus dem Binnenleben der Wiener Analytikergruppe, macht deren Kränkung spürbar, als Freud ihnen die Züricher Universitätspsychiater um Jung vorzog, und schildert Freuds charismatische Kraft als Lehrer und Gruppenleiter. Anstößig wirkt die Aggressivität, die viele Passagen durchdringt, und Sadgers unverkennbare Ambivalenz gegenüber Freud. Die Herausgeber stellen in einem ausführlichen Nachwort zusammen, was über Sadgers Leben bekannt ist, charakterisieren seine Position unter seinen Kollegen und bieten paradigmatische Einblicke in sein Werk.
