The story of Russian imperialism has deep historical roots, and this book shows how Byzantium, the most powerful medieval and Christian empire, is repeatedly presented in Russian history as the source of the empire's imperial legitimacy. The author reflects on the role of art and the humanities (especially history and art history) within the power ambitions of regimes and political parties over the last two centuries as tools for the repeated reinvention of an empire's identity; an identity built on a multitude of invented pasts. Within this self-referential narrative, Byzantium becomes the ultimate authority justifying the aggression of the Russian state, and Orthodox belief becomes the bridge linking the medieval past with the present. One of the paradoxes of this narrative is the use of the same past by regimes as different as those of the last Romanovs, Stalin, and Putin, leading to a fundamental question: does this propaganda image really underlie the core identity of Russia?

Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. Despite its incredible richness, the Armenian cultural heritage remains today at the margins of the art historical canon. The roots of this situation can be traced back to the second half of 19th century when Armenian art was deliberately marginalized by the official scholarship within the Russian Empire. By providing a historiographical examination of this context, we aim to demonstrate how medieval Armenian art became a tool in the Russian imperialistic policy. Besides, we also attempt to address the impact of the late 19th-century imperialism on our present. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. Is it possible to "invent" the past? Through a series of studies, this volume explores the history of how this process occurred in Czechoslovakia within the period from about the end of the First World War until the 1960s. It focuses specifically on the re-invention of the "national" Middle Ages at the background of the meeting of different linguistic and ethnic groups - Czechs, Slovaks, Germans, and Russians - where one group would often negate, reshape, and ignore the point of view of the other, within an increasingly fractured political geography of the country. The presented case studies show how research on medieval artworks and objects could become a fertile ground for the creation of ideological tools and narratives. In this way, understanding the historiography of art history also contributes to redefining Central Europe as a place of transcultural encounters and dialogues, beyond historical ruptures. Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. Presenting a long-term informal interview, this book's contents span the spring of 2017 and early January 2023. This was a conversation between friends, protracted by phone calls and home visits, but with that spark of electric excitement fed by shared interests and desires. Here, Hans Belting, one of the greatest art historians ever, recounts his intellectual parabola. Wandering from post-war Germany to the United States in the late 1950s, to Europe in the second half of the twentieth century and into the beginning of the new millennium, readers will slowly uncover the common threads of his life story: the shimmering function of images between body and object, an openness to collaboration and interdisciplinarity, and of course, a fascination with the history of images from the Middle Ages up to the contemporary moment.
