24Mo Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. 242pp (p243 is missing). Marbled boards, title pastedown on front board. Text is clean on pages unmarked save for one page with pen outlining. Hinges are intact, textblock is square with rounded corners. Considerable overall shelf/timewear, boardwear, heavy board edge and cornerwear, peeling, outer spine is heavily chipped, foxing and blush throughout, pen writing on inside front, pencil writing on endpaper.

1st edition. [2], 216 pp. Frontispiece. Other illustrations issued in separate volume. 12mo. 7-3/8" x 4-1/2" VG+ (some extremity wear to binding/a bit of foxing to preliminary & terminal leaves). Overall, a quite respectable copy. Original publisher's yellow printed paper-wrapped boards with gilt-lettered brown leather spine. Speckled edges.

Illustrated by 82 b/w engraved text figures. Stated 24th from the 54th edition. c.1831, 1846. Rebound in brown J. Hewit acid free cawburn goat, new head bands, Dodin French shell endpapers and topboard cut out. Entire text block dis-assembled, washed, dried and restitiched removing all foxing and stains. Gilt stamped spine. 16mo. pp. viii, 9-422, [12] index. Near Fine/No jacket, as issued. Beautiful restored to new copy.

CONDITION: Good, front and back covers with some spotting and staining, head of spine chipped; contents good, small ink stamp consisting of two letters reading "pr" below date on title page, moderate foxing; a nice, tight copy. First edition. A history of mining throughout the world, fortuitously published at the beginning of the California gold rush. "The discovery of California gold made Comstock's world survey appeal to a much wider audience. He hurriedly included information on California and added a final chapter entitled 'Estimated Expenses of Outfits from the United States to California.' He opened by saying his printer allowed him no time to fully develop the subject. Comstock also calculated the cost of going to California, the loss of labor in the eastern United States, and estimated that it would take $22,260,000 in California gold before the United States would realize a profit"-Kurutz.
