Vintage reference photograph from the 1952 Western, showing actor Jeff Chandler in redface as Apache chief Cochise. Annotations in manuscript ink and pencil, printed mimeo snipe, date stamp, and provenance stamps and labels on the verso. Based loosely on the events of the 1861 Bascomb Affair and the 1862 Battle of Apache Pass, during which Native Americans first encountered howitzers and other modern artillery after the reigning Union government breached several existing treaties and sparked a conflict that resulted in 25 years of Apache unrest. Chandler's second performance as Cochise, following "Broken Arrow" (1950). From the archive of noted Hollywood still photographer Ray Jones. Born in Wisconsin on January 1, 1901, Jones worked for Paramount Pictures in the early 1930s, and went on to be the head of the still photography department at Universal Pictures in 1935, where he worked well into the 1950s. Set in the New Mexico Territory during the Civil War, shot on location in Utah. 8 x 9.5 inches, trimmed irregularly. Very Good, moderately worn.

Five vintage reference photographs from the 1955 film. Two with provenance labels affixed to the versos. Perhaps the ultimate film noir in the classic cycle, and by far the best (and most insanely interpreted) Spillane adaptation. Director Robert Aldrich spins the hard boiled source material into a symphony of speed, violence, and Cold War nuclear terror, today often acknowledged as a major influence on the French New Wave. Set in Los Angeles area, shot in Los Angeles (including The Castle and other locations in Bunker Hill), and Malibu. 10 x 8 inches. Near Fine. National Film Registry. Criterion Collection 568. Selby US Masterwork. Silver Classic Noir. Spicer US.
