In its original paper dust wrapper, browned and chipped and rubbed at edges, sunned to brittle over spine, shelf worn.

Hardcover, no dust jacket. Ex-Libris with usual library matter and stamps to upper, lower, and outer edges of text. Slight wear on all edges of text. Cover slightly worn in corners and ends of spine. Else good 175 pp.

Green Cloth Hardback. Zustand: Very Good. Reprint. 1946. Reprint. ix, 177pp. Jacques Maritain (1882-1973) was a French Catholic philosopher. Raised Protestant, he was agnostic before converting to Catholicism in 1906. An author of more than 60 books, he helped to revive Thomas Aquinas for modern times, and was influential in the development and drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Art and Scholasticism was first translated into English in 1923 under the title 'The Philosophy of Art', with only 500 copies being printed. This is a new translation from the later French edition, which has been considerably revised by the author with additions and several new notes. The work is considered his major contribution to aesthetics, and according to Gary Furnell "was a key text that guided the work of writers such as Allen Tate, Caroline Gordon, Sally and Robert Fitzgerald, Francois Mauriac, Thomas Merton, John Howard Griffin, Flannery O'Connor and T.S. Eliot." The book is bound in the original green cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling on the boards. There is a little bubbling and wrinkling to the cloth on the boards and the spine ends are bumped. The titling on the spine is worn and is now indistinct. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription.

Binding sound, text unmarked. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. Dustwrapper chipped and edge worn but unclipped and protected in a removable clear plastic sleeve. Staining/toning to edges. Old gift inscription (to Jonathan Robinson in 1948, later of the Oratory, Toronto) at front; a few markings to text, almost all in light pencil. Otherwise clean, tight and unmarked. Very neat -- a sound copy.
