Erstausgabe
First editions of all three volumes of Jane Austen's second novel and most popular. Octavo, three volumes, bound in contemporary three quarter calf over marbled boards with gilt titles to the spine. In very good condition. Armorial bookplates to each pastedown. Period gift inscription from the year of publication to the title page of Vol. I.: "Mary Anne King given her by her mother April 1813." An exceptional example of this landmark work in English literature, rare and desirable bound in contemporary calf. Pride and Prejudice was written between October 1796 and August 1797 when Jane Austen was not yet twenty-one. After an early rejection by the publisher Cadell, who had not even read it, Austen's novel was finally bought by Egerton in 1812 for £110. It was published in late January 1813 in a small edition of approximately 1500 copies and sold for 18 shillings in boards. Volume I of the first edition was printed by Roworth and Volumes II and III by Sidney, and their imprints appear both on the versos of the half titles and at the end of the text of each volume In a letter to her sister Cassandra on 29 January 1813, Austen writes of receiving her copy of the newly publishing novel (her "own darling child"), and while acknowledging its few errors, she expresses her feelings toward its heroine as such: "I must confess that I think her as delightful a creature as ever appeared in print, & how I shall be able to tolerate those who do not like her at least, I do not know." Gilson A3; Grolier English 69; Keynes 3; Sadleir 62b. With a contemporary ink gift inscription to volume one, "Mary Anne King given her by her mother. April 1813" to title, Campbell family bookplate to pastedowns. Lacking the half-titles. With volume one lacking text f. F9 (pp. 113-114).

Second edition of the first novel published during Austen's lifetime. Small octavo, three volumes bound in full crushed morocco by Riviere & Son, gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, triple gilt ruling to the front and rear panels, gilt turn-ins and inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Title and half-title pages supplied. Bookplate to the pastedown of Vol. I. In near fine condition. A very attractive example of this desirable rarity. Austen's first published novel, Sense and Sensibility follows the story of the three Dashwood sisters as they must move with their widowed mother from the estate on which they grew up, Norland Park. The novel, which sold out its first print run of 750 copies in the middle of 1813, marked a success for its author. It had a second print run later that year. It was the first Austen title to be republished in England after her death, and the first illustrated Austen book produced in Britain, in Richard Bentley's Standard Novels series of 1833. Austen paid to have the book published and paid the publisher a commission on sales. The cost of publication was more than a third of Austen's annual household income but she made a profit of £140 on the first edition, which sold all 750 printed copies by July 1813. The novel has been in continuous publication since 1811, and has many times been illustrated, excerpted, abridged, and adapted for stage, film, and television.
Leather Binding. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. A delightful copy with great provenance of the first American edition of this Jane Austen classic. This copy is from the library of Cordelia Darrach, one of the great early 'fangirls' of the American literary public, with her signature on the title page of each volume ('Mrs. Cordelia Darrach'). A very good copy in mid-19th century brown morocco over marbled boards, spine with raised bands, gilt titling, and twin gilt rules at foot (light wear; text has some browning and foxing). Very lightly inscribed in pencil on front free endpaper: 'For Mrs [Nelson?] to while away yr leisure hours.' One of only 1250 copies issued of the first American edition, published just as Richard Bentley was re-issuing Austen's work in the UK. Gilson B5. No further American edition was issued until 1838. Darrach's passionate letters to authors and friends about how books impacted her life and spirit have become part of the critical literature of the period. See Darrach's letters quoted and discussed in Williams, 'Widening the World: Susan Warner, Her Readers, and the Assumption of Authorship', (1990), and Zboray, 'Real Readers and Their Responses in Antebellum Boston ' (1997). Cordelia Elizabeth Darrach, nee Richards (1818-1870), lived mainly in Gloucester County, New Jersey, and is buried in Bala Cynwyd, PA. Married at 15 or 16, Darrach became a passionate reader at a young age: 'after finishing Maria Susanna Cummins's Mabel Vaughan in 1858, Cordelia E. Darrach expressed to Caroline A. (Briggs) Mason the painful memories invoked by this realistic novel: 'The heartlessness of fashionable society is well depicted, for I have had some experience of it in my younger days, and I never liked it, never could bear it.' And there were psychological challenges as well: '.Darrach, suffering with a painful 'neuralgia' during one particularly rainy New England spring in 1858, observed: 'I could not settle myself to any other occupation than reading.' She continued to confide to her friend that it is 'a blessing . to be fond of reading, and to have access to books, particularly such as soothe and elevate the mind.' (Zboray, page 152; 161).

Cloth. Zustand: Good. None (illustrator). First edition. A scarce, first American edition of Jane Austen's final novel. In the publisher's original binding, and with the scarce adverts. Complete with the often missing publisher's catalogue to the rear of the first volume for Carey and Lea.These volumes are in the publisher's original binding, and held in a very bright custom slipcase.A scarce edition of Jane Austen's final novel. Persuasion was first published in England six months after Austen's death. It concerns Anne Elliot, the 27 year old protagonist whose family moves to lower their expenses. This novel is often regarded as Austen's most maturely written novel.Upon initial publication this work received moderate success, but its fame came later into the nineteenth century and continued onward to the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.Gilson (B3) notes that 'relatively few copies of the 1832-1833 Philadelphia editions are known to survive'.Austen's novels mark the transition to nineteenth century realism from the novels of sensibility that dominated the late eighteenth century. Her biting irony, humour and social commentary have lead her novels to be in high standing centuries later. In the publisher's original quarter cloth binding, with paper covered boards. Housed in an excellent full calf slipcase, which is in a fine condition. Externally, both volumes are sound, with a loss to the backstrips, heavier to volume I which is in need of careful handling. Patches of light rubbing and a few ink marks to the boards. Rear blanks to both volumes have small portions removed by hand, possibly to omit a prior owner's inscriptions. Ink marks to the rear endpaper of volume II, and a prior owner's inscription regarding this work. Prior owner's inscription to the front endpapers, title pages and first text leaf of both volumes 'C H & J Myers'. Front free endpaper to volume I is detached but present. Front hinge to volume I is tender, and the board may detach unless carefully handled. Otherwise, both volumes are generally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with scattered spotting, heavier to the first and last few pages. Good. book.

2 vols., large 12mo. Engraved frontispiece in each volume by Delvaux after Charles-Abraham Chasselat, with the series half-title in each volume: "Oeuvres de Mme. La Baronne Isabelle de Montolieu. Tome XV [-XVI]." Some browning to the edges of the first few leaves in each volume, but an attractive copy in antique-style rose half morocco over pink boards, spines gilt-ruled and lettered. Second edition in French, not so stated, in the same format as the first edition of 1821, and retaining the first illustrations ever to appear of any Jane Austen novel. David Gilson gives an excellent account of the translation, noting among other things that it incorporates "a moderately faithful rendering of Henry Austen s `Biographical notice. " For some reason Madame de Montolieu changed the heroine s name from Anne to Alice, which is a little jarring for any Janeite looking at the frontispiece to Vol. II, showing Captain Wentworth placing his fateful letter: "Il s approcha de la table, montra la lettre à Alice, et sortit sans dire un mot." The frontispiece to the first volume shows Captain Wentworth lifting the child Walter Musgrove off Anne/Alice - both frontispiece subjects are impressively well-chosen. These French translations are notoriously rare, though perhaps, as David Gilson writes, "less desperately rare than they appeared to be [to Sir Geoffrey Keynes] in 1929." This edition is Gilson, Jane Austen, C12; he illustrates the frontispiece to Vol. I from his own copy (he did not have Vol. II). Gilson and OCLC locate copies of both the 1821 and the present edition in a few Continental libraries, also Cambridge, Illinois, and Yale for the 1821 edition, and for this 1828 one only Gilson s own Vol. I and Geoffrey Keynes s complete copy.

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. 1st Edition. First edition(s), first printing(s). **UNIQUE & SPECIAL** The Suez Crisis Meets Jane Austen! A truly wonderful, one-of-a-kind Jane Austen highlight of considerable interest and value. This gorgeous set of books, from the coveted Large Paper Edition published in 1923, were the U.K. Prime Minister Anthony Eden's own personal copies. Each of the five volumes bear his ownership bookplate to front pastedown - depicting the Eden family coat of arms with the Latin inscription 'Si sit Prudentia' printed below - it translates as "Ever Prudent." Fine association copies of books by Jane Austen are decidedly rare and this example, with its historical and political provenance, is simply wonderful - to consider the post-war, British Prime Minister handling the books, applying his personal bookplates, and possibly settling down to read them, is both fascinating and thrilling. Anthony Eden, 1st Earl of Avon, was in office from 1955-1957 and was acknowledged by many in British politics as Winston Churchill's successor. During a period of immense international tension, Prime Minister Eden would focus on foreign affairs, yet it would be his controversial handling of the Suez crisis in 1956, during the second year of his premiership, that ultimately proved to be his downfall. The books are one of 1000 sets printed (950 for sale) from the famous 1923 Large Paper edition. They remain in the original grey quarter cloth with marbled paper over boards and printed spine title labels. The edition is splendid and is celebrated as one of the finest and most handsome of all the Austen editions. With charming chromo-collotype frontispieces and further black-and-white illustrated plates, the edition was edited by R. W. Chapman and additionally features various appendix notes as well as folding maps to two of the volumes, as called for. A few of the leaves to some of the volumes remain unopened. In excellent condition overall, and free of any ownership names or markings - aside from Anthony Eden's, of course - or any major defects. Clean and sound throughout with the untrimmed deckle edges adding to the overall antiquarian feel of the lovely volumes. The bindings remain sound, though there is a slight forward lean to the spine of "Pride and Prejudice." The marbled boards have aged beautifully and display just the right, desirable degree of antiquarian wear to retain their aesthetically attractive appearance overall. This edition was issued with a spare label bound in at the rear of each volume, should you wish to replace the present aged label. Loosely inserted in the pages of "Pride and Prejudice", we discovered an old and delightfully mysterious notepaper letter, handwritten in pencil, which very much appears to be from Eden's first wife, Beatrice Beckett. Mention is made of "Love to Nicholas" - which was the name of the couple's third son, and she writes "I hope your speech tomorrow goes off well." The letter ends with what certainly looks like "Beatrice." Interesting stuff, eh! The writing is now faint and it took some deciphering but I believe this to be an early, personal item of Eden ephemera. To sum up, a wholly unique Austen set from this important edition, and a real treat for the serious collector or book lover. Dimensions: Approx.15cm x 23cm. A relative unknown illustrator Hugh Thompson was an Irish Illustrator born at Coleraine near Derry. he took the task of creating 160 line drawings to produce the first and still finest illustrated edition. The success of George Allens " PEACOCK EDITION " launched Thompson's career as as a first class and prominent illustrator who is best known for his pen-and-ink illustrations of works by authors Charles Dickens, and J. M. Barrie. In total, Thomson illustrated sixty-five books and contributed a large number of illustrations to magazines and other periodicals. When working on a new illustration, Thomson would research his subject in the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum. He would often take detailed notes on costumes, furniture, old prints, and architectural records. His attention to detail can been seen in his sketchbooks, which include pages devoted to the changing styles of ladies and gentleman attire. Jane Austen born 16 December 1775 died 18 July 1817 was an English novelist known primarily for her six major novels, which interpret, critique and comment upon the British landed gentry at the end of the 18th century. Includes Austen's novels Sense and Sensibility;Pride and Prejudice; Mansfield Park; Emma; Northanger Abbey; and Persuasion as well as her short works and letters. Jane Austen December 16,1775 - July 18, 1817 was an English novelist whose works of romantic fiction, set among the landed gentry, earned her a place as one of the most widely read writers in English literature. Her realism, biting irony and social commentary as well as her acclaimed plots have gained her historical importance among scholars and critics. Austen's works critique the novels of sensibility of the second half of the 18th century and are part of the transition to 19th century realism. Her plots, though fundamentally comic, highlight the dependence of women on marriage to secure social standing and economic security. Her works, though usually popular, were first published anonymously and brought her little personal fame and only a few positive reviews during her lifetime.
