[Bjørn Tysdahl, Mats Jansson, Jakob Lothe and Steen Klitgård Povlsen, Editors] {Norvik Press; Norwich; 2000; Cloth; Near Fine/Very Good; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall; ISBN: 1-870041-49-6.} Dj rubbed, with slight wear at extremities, faint crease at rear tail. Clean and unmarked. "This invaluable collection of essays explores the relationship between the Anglo-American Modernism associated with James Joyce, Henry James, T. S. Eliot, Virginia Woolf, William Faulkner, and others, and the forms of Modernism that emerged in the different Nordic countries at widely differing moments. Modernism is a truly international movement, which cuts across many national boundaries, yet not every manifestation is the same and these thematically homogeneous but methodologically diverse essays subject this phenomenon to systematic discussion. But in the process of establishing affinities and differences between Anglo-American and Nordic Modernism this book provides English readers with a novel, and long overdue, map of the inception and growth of Modernism in the Nordic countries and thus invites renewed exploration of the familiar, and seemingly well-charted Modernism of the English, Irish, and American pantheon." Stockholm / Stehag / Eslöv, Östlings Bokförlag Symposion, 2005. 8:o. 412 sid. + 16 planscher. Med register. / Abstract in English.

Zustand: New. 245 pages ; 23 cm. This book discusses literary translation in the cultural and historical context of the Nordic countries. Focusing on a range of authors and exploring various aspects and challenges of translation, the contributors emphasize the interdependence of and interrelationships between translation, literature, literary history and literary culture. Although the main emphasis is on translations of individual works and authors, attention is also paid to "translation" as an inevitable element in other forms of writing, including the presence of the "foreign" in original writing, and the translational element in any literary discussion of foreign literature. .The volume thus aims to broaden the scope of literary history and of literary studies. A growing awareness of the importance of translation can be witnessed in all the Nordic countries. As these countries have a strong mutual interest in each other's cultures, translations between their languages are also important. All in all, the volume demonstrates how ideas, values, genres and literary forms travel in translation both between the Nordic languages and between the Nordic languages and those outside the Nordic region.
