Paperback. Zustand: Fine. Illustrated with color and b/w photos throughout. From the Foreword: Jayce Salloum is an artist whose practice and productions defy ready categorization. He has travelled widely, lived in various cities, and his contributions to visual art have been equally peripatetic. While his primary occupation is that of a visual artist, Salloum has also worked as a teacher, writer, curator, and community activist. After a decade of concentration on video and mixed-media installation, he recently returned to photography, picking up a thread of investigation never really abandoned, but placed on the back burner while he addressed pressing issues through other means. This publication and the two photo-installation exhibitions it documents are based on Salloum's untitled project, an ongoing body of street photography installed in a syncopated spatial arrangement and presented in different formats at each successive venue. Salloum's dynamic arrangement of photographs across the gallery walls in NEUTRAL/BRAKES/STEERING at the Agnes Etherington Art Centre and in 22 oz. THUNDERBOLT at the Contemporary Art Gallery mimics the staccato and subjective selectivity of perception experienced within the urban environment. The individual photographs and their clustered arrangement distill the material improvisations and the quality of obdurate resistance that characterize the fabric of city life, especially in its most overlooked corners. As Jennifer Fisher and Jim Drobnick point out in their essay, "Archive of the Street," Salloum's selection and placement of images are calculated to forestall any straightforward reading within given aesthetic conventions. Salloum would extend this to include, in particular, those pertaining to the tradition of documentary photography. The often commonplace images that he presents, images that we often do not assimilate, assume a myriad of meanings through their relationships within the whole configuration. In order to expose the conceptual and aesthetic concerns th.

Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. Pages from a book produced in Nazi Germany are the source material for the work, but the manner in which Salloum has treated them renders them less recognizable and disrupts their original message. The work exploits and exaggerates the fragmentary character of photography in order "to challenge the idea that the medium is an accurate documentation of a particular place at a specific time, depicting a singular truth about its subject matter. Jayce Salloum has been working in installation, photography, mixed and new media and video since 1975, as well as curating exhibitions, conducting workshops and coordinating cultural events. After 22 years living and working in San Francisco, Banff, Toronto, San Diego, Beirut, and New York, he now lives/works out of Vancouver. His work takes place in a variety of contexts critically engaging itself in the representation of cultural/social/political manifestations and other cultures. OCLC lists one copy of this work at the Berlin State Museum Art Library. 62 - 8.5"x11" pages, bound in printed mylar. Very nice condition. Size: 4to - over 9¾. Book.
