Willes Jennings and Christopher Addison's journey to Abyssinia (modern Ethiopia) and Eritrea, during which they hoped to discover more about the government, political systems, and ethnography of the people that resided there.Major J. Willes Jennings was a Principal Medical Officer of the British Armed Forces and Christopher Addison was a Lecturer on Anatomy at the Charing Cross Hospital Medical School.Including a preface by Colonel A.N. Rochfort.The first edition of this scarce work.Illustrated with sixty-five illustrations from photographs taken by Major J. Willes Jennings, as well as a folding map. Collated and complete.Containing a previous owner's bookplate and a small ownership stamp to the front pastedown, and a previous bookseller's sticker to the rear pastedown. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, some bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities and light shelf wear to the boards. Cloth is split slightly to the joints. Bound in brown cloth with a camel on the front cover, gilt still bright, top edges gilt, binding and hinges tight. INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR on the front free endpaper [appears to be] "To T. W. Budge / With very kind regards from / Major Jennings". Sir Ernest Alfred Thompson Wallis Budge [1857-1934] was a well known Egyptologist, Orientalist and Philologist, with one of his studies being the Ge'ez language of Ethiopia. Covers show bumped corners, interior shows foxing throughout. From the personal collection of Dr. Brooks Ryder (1918-1995), graduate of Harvard College, Harvard School of Public Health, and Tufts Medical School. Known for his Public Health expertise overseas, throughout East Africa and Indonesia. Inscribed by Author(s).
