Der Krieg verhilft Jim Vaus zu einer ungewöhnlichen Laufbahn als Spezialist für Elektronik. Sie endet allerdings zunächst in einem Militärgefängnis. Dann macht Jim in Los Angeles ein eigenes Büro auf. Unter anderem baut er Abhörgeräte für die Polizei. Das ist interessant und bringt Ehre, aber wenig Dollars. Es gibt noch andere Leute, die interessante Arbeit zu bieten haben. Sie ist zwar nicht ehrenvoll, dafür aber umso einträglicher. Jim Vaus, der Geld zu schätzen weiß, wird technischer Berater der kalifornischen Unterwelt. Bis zu einem Tag im November 1949. Von da an geht Jim Vaus den schweren Weg zurück. Sein Buch ist ein abenteuerlicher Rechenschaftsbericht.
