The aim of the study, which was motivated by the realization that rapid population growth was becoming a world health hazard, was to trace the changes in the size of population brought about be births, deaths, and migrations, and in its environment, as those changes affect community health and social well-being. The contributions of the study are threefold: it documents in detail as few other investigations do, demographic variation of a defined population over a prolonged period; it provides significant implications for future population studies in its careful account of a trial contraceptive program among poorly educated people in an underdeveloped country; its collateral research into factors influencing population dynamics yields important data and concepts applicable to local and national birth control programs.
