The first signature is accompanied by "Louisville, KY". The second signature, dated Nov. 23, 1906, is part of an inscription by the author to the Commercial Club Library. A small plate on the inside front cover reads: "Greater Louisville Exposition, Louisville Authors, Given by Commercial Club." J. Stoddard Johnston served in the Confederate army as a distinguished staff officer to Gens. Bragg, Buckner and John C. Breckinridge during the Civil War, rising to the rank of Lt.
