Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. A classic piece of Hollywood musical history, "Anniversary Song" was written by Al Jolson and Saul Chaplin, adapting Romanian composer Iosif Ivanovici's celebrated 1880 waltz "Waves of the Danube." Introduced in Columbia Pictures' enormously successful 1946 biographical film The Jolson Story starring Larry Parks, the song became one of the biggest popular standards of the postwar era, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard charts in early 1947 and helping renew interest in Jolson's career. This example is the 1946 first sheet music edition issued by Mood Music Company with sole selling agents Shapiro, Bernstein & Co. The front cover features the distinctive blue-and-white montage promoting The Jolson Story, while the rear advertises additional Columbia Pictures musical releases including Dead Reckoning starring Humphrey Bogart and Down to Earth starring Rita Hayworth, firmly dating the publication to the film's original release period. Condition: Very Good. Complete and structurally sound with a clean interior. Moderate age toning to the covers, light edge wear and corner creasing, a small pencil ownership name at the top of the front cover. No detached pages, significant tears, or writing to the music noted. A handsome, highly displayable example. Al Jolson (1886-1950) was one of the most influential entertainers of the first half of the twentieth century. Nicknamed "The World's Greatest Entertainer," he dominated vaudeville, Broadway, recordings, and early sound films. His life inspired the Academy Award-winning film The Jolson Story, for which this song was written. Saul Chaplin (1912-1997) was an Academy Award-winning composer, arranger, pianist, and music director whose Hollywood career included An American in Paris, West Side Story, and The Sound of Music. His adaptation of Ivanovici's melody with Jolson transformed a nineteenth-century European waltz into one of America's enduring popular songs.…

Zustand: Fair. The Jolson Story was a 1946 Columbia Pictures Technicolor Production, a musical biography which tells the life story of singer Al Jolson. It was a huge success and was followed up by the 1949 sequel Jolson Sings Again. It was directed by Alfred E Green and won Academy Awards for Best Music, Scoring of a Musical Picture, and Best Sound Recording (John Livadary). It was nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role (Larry Parks), Best Actor in a Supporting Role (William Demarest), Best Cinematography, Color and Best Film Editing. Anniversary Song is the title given this piece by Al Jolson, when he and Saul Chaplin adapted it for this film. It is actually Waves of the Danube, written in 1880 by the Romanian composer Ion Ivanovici and still one of the most famous of Romanian songs. Ivanovici is credited on this sheet music. Condition: This is two pages of music plus covers. It is somewhat frail and there is a 1" tear to the edge of both sheets, which you can see on the scan. There is a label on the top which will steam off. But the colours are nice and bright and it will look fabulous when framed. A competent framer can do a nice job with it. NOTE: I have a lot of sheet music listed here. Contact me if you'd like to buy more than one piece and combine shipping.…
