Prior to this lake attaining National Park status and associated protection, little was known about its condition. Initiated in 1984, this study set out to investigate potential changes in lake clarity. The unique characteristics of Crater Lake make it ideal for investigating the health and vitality of deep, ultra-oligotrophic lakes worldwide and has revealed the significance of atmospheric-derived elements as primary nutrient sources. The study also began to untangle the factors controlling clarity and productivity and provided evidence for modest but significant changes in water clarity. The book provides an excellent foundation for future research into the complex interactions between climate, nutrients, and the biosphere in deep, ultra-oligotrophic lakes.
