First Edition. "Jonathan Mason Warren's position in the history of medicine has generally been overlooked. Perhaps this is due to having been the son and grandson as well as the father of illustrious surgeons. Yet by his own accomplishments, Mason Warren should stand alone. His contributions were more than isolated surgical feats. Systematically, he explored the possibilities of reconstructive surgery. Through his techniques and writings and his prominence in American medicine, he made his profession aware of what this kind of surgery could offer the patient" (Goldwyn, "Jonathan Mason Warren and His Contribution to Plastic Surgery", in McDowell, p. 466; see pp. 460-66). "In the present work, Warren discusses his work in plastic surgery, including rhinoplasty and staphylorrhaphy. He was especially expert at repairing clefts of the palate, having observed Dieffenbach and Roux while in Europe and being familiar with his father's work. The book also contains chapters covering the head and neck, chest, genitourinary system, abdomen, arteries and veins, tumors, injuries and diseases of the nerves, and anesthetics" (Heirs of Hippocrates 1762). See Garrison-Morton 5743.3 for Warren's 1837 paper, the "first rhinoplasty reported in the United States"; and Garrison-Morton 5745 for his 1842 paper on "the first operation for closure of complete clefts of the palate."
