Cloth. Zustand: Good Plus. First Edition. Illustrated. 239 pages. First Edition copy of what most consider the best golf book of the 20th century. A period advertisement for the book reads: "Bobby Jones---the most popular figure in the world of sports today---winner in the same season of both American and British open championships---reveals his golf history and the methods of play that have made him 'the greatest golfer of all time." Grantland Rice writes in the forward "The start of Bobby Jones' career to date is one of the most interesting episodes in all sport, one of the most unusual of all careers. The story of Bobby Jones is truth that is stranger and far more interesting than fiction, a saga of youth that could only be sung in the modern game." By the end of his short career in 1930 Jones had won the U.S. Open four times, the U.S. Amateur five times, the British Open three times, and the British Amateur once. Green cloth bright, spine slightly discolored. Pastedowns and endpapers clean and bright with no cracking to interior gutters. Original green and tan cloth with gilt lettering and illustration of crossed clubs, slight wear to extremities. Front free endpaper with former owner name upper left, no cracking to interior gutters. By the end of his short career in 1930 Jones had won the U.S. Open four times, the U.S. Amateur five times, the British Open three times, and the British Amateur once. THIS YEAR-OF-PUBLICATION PRESENTATION COPY IS INSCRIBED AND AUTOGRAPHED BY BOBBY JONES: "BEST WISHES FOR WORLDS OF HAPPINESS TO _______ AND ______. SINCERELY, BOB JONES". ADDITIONALLY, AUTOGRAPHED BY PERRY ADAIR AND CHARLES J. BLACK, JR. DIRECTLY BELOW JONES' SIGNATURE. THIS BOOK WAS GIVEN TO THE RECIPIENT ON THE OCCASION OF HER ENGAGEMENT PARTY IN 1927 AND SIGNED BY THESE CLOSE PERSONAL FRIENDS, THREE WINNERS OF THE GEORGIA STATE AMATEUR (Jones in 1916, Adair in 1922, and Black would win in 1928.) Oliver Perry Adair won the Southern Amateur 1n 1921 and 1923. Adair and Bobby Jones were childhood pals at East Lake Golf Club, and with Alexa Stirling, the three "Dixie Kids" toured the U.S. in 1917 and 1918, playing exhibition matches to benefit the Red Cross' World War I Relief. A signed note from the recipient to her progeny is laid in. The note is written with a fountain pen, dated 1964, and reads in part: "THIS BOOK WAS GIVEN TO ME AT OUR ENGAGEMENT PARTY IN ATLANTA IN 1927. BOB AND MARY JONES WERE OLD FRIENDS OF MINE, ALSO PERRY ADAIR AND HIS WIFE CHARLIE BLACK WAS A "TOP" LOCAL GOLFER AND A SPECIAL OLD "SWEETHEART OF MINE." Charles Harman Black, Jr. was a lifelong friend of Jones, even playing together in an event to benefit the Navy Relief Society in the 1942 Hail America National Open Golf Tournament, invited by the USGA. Black became a founding member of Peachtree Golf Club in 1946, president from 1953-55 following the term filled by his close friend Jones. Original tan spine cloth worn at extremities; green cloth covers generally clean, light wear to title gilding. "1927" written upper pastedown, front hinge reinforced with paper strip. Paperclip indent upper half title page where above referenced note was attached. Pages 201 -204 with repaired tear, and roughly spilt, as are the chronology pages 235-239, the latter with heavy loss along most of the three page edges. Covers protected in mylar. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Autographed By Author and Others. Presentation Copy.
