This book delves into a chapter of 17th-century history, detailing the life and times of Mr. Carstairs, a controversial figure at the heart of political and religious upheavals in Scotland under the reigns of Charles II and James II. The author narrates Mr. Carstairs's clandestine activities as a confidant to the Prince of Orange, William III, while navigating the tumultuous religious and political landscape of the time, including the infamous Rye-House plot, weaving together themes of loyalty, betrayal, and the relentless pursuit of religious freedom. The book sheds light on a crucial period in British history, providing a nuanced exploration of the interplay between faith, politics, and the enduring human spirit in the face of adversity. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Full-Leather. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. xii, 800 p. 27 cm. Full tree calf with gold impressing. Hinges and corners repaired. Two nicks in front fore-edge and slight dent in rear. Some foxing and minor soiling within. Title continues: "Confidential Secretary to K. William during the whole of his Reign; afterwards Principal of the University of Edinburgh. Relating to Public Affairs in Great-Britain, but more particularly in Scotland, during the Reigns of K. William and Q. Anne. To which is Prefixed The Life of Mr. Carstares." William Carstares (1649-1715), Presbyterian minister and a leader of the Scottish church, worked for the union of England and Scotland, served as principal of the University of Edinburgh, and was four times moderator of the general assembly of the Church of Scotland. This collection of his papers contains a biography, proceedings in the Scottish parliament, letters, petitions, etc. The editor, Dr. Joseph McCormick (1733-1799), was Principal of the United College, St. Andrews and a grand-nephew of Carstares. Perhaps he was a bit like his grand-uncle, for politics, not preaching, was his preferred pastime.
