She has been awarded numerous fellowships in France and the United States and has won the Jurzykowski Prize and the Thornton Wilder Prize from the Translation Center at Columbia University, as well as the Austrian Georg Trakl Prize for poetry. -- "A Japanese boy, sitting on a leaf that hangs from a mulberry tree, is painting./ Why is it that no one shouts:"Hold on, you will fall!"/ No one runs to save him. / It is the merit of the old, experienced artist. He has survived more than/ one earthquake, but he entrusts the boy to the mulberry leaf." (Julia Hartwig, Safety) --- "Under this island there is another island, maybe even more beautiful./ Smiling she swims toward it, uniting with a flash-like arc the rock,/ the air, and the water./ I would like to see you from all sides, creature, fragment, storm, splendid/ madness of a clear mind." (Julia Hartwig, Under This Island) "(.) If the task of language is to achieve a mutual understanding, poetic language constitutes the highest form of human communication, it is the highest degree of linguistic initiation. Above it there is only music. For an author, each translation of his work or her work into a foreign language represents a crossing of the border, a sign that a door, until now closed, opens up to new visitors. The selection presented here includes poems from different periods; it is the first such publication of my poems in English in Poland. Although my poems were translated into many languages, so far they have appeared as a separate book only in Italy, and in the United States. The Italian volume, similar to the present one, is bilingual, with the Polish text facing translations. There is no need to stress the usefulness that stems from a bilingual edition." (Julia Hartwig, Afterword to "Selected Poems").
