Buch Erstausgabe
First edition. xxviii, 368pp, 16 maps and plans, publisher's list tipped in before title-page; publisher's old type red cloth gilt; a mint copy. This is the last series started by Karl Baedeker himself before he died in 1859. Plans include Versailles, Rouen, Dieppe and Strassburg. This is an excellent copy of a very rare first edition. Hinrichsen D329.
Verlag: Karl Baedeker, Publisher, Leipsic, 1896
Softcover. Zustand: Good+. A Baedeker's Guide Book, softcover booklet with stiff card covers and maps present at the front and back, the front hinge has been neatly repaired, and there are two seemingly anachronistic, but related, stickers affixed to the first free end page with a very short creased tear at the head. The booklet also has bumps to the spine ends and corners with shallow losses to the cloth at the spine ends, light creasing to the corners, and rubbing with toning and slight edge wear to the covers. Overall, a solid, Good+ copy of this scare edition, originally published to coincide with the first modern Olympics in Athens. Additional images available by request.

Buch Erstausgabe
First edition. xxvii, 260pp, 12 engraved views, 24 maps and plans, most pages with light foxing;as is usual; rebacked preserving most of the publisher's red cloth gilt; overall a very good copy. First English edition. 'Rhine' was the first English Baedeker title to be published and there were eighteen subsequent editions, the last was published in 1926. This title also covers Northern Germany including Berlin and also a short excursion to Copenhagen. This is the last English edition to contain the attractive scenic engraved views. Plans include Bonn, Coblenz, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt and Strasburg. Few copies survive and it is therefore very scarce. This copy despite the foxing is still a very good example. Endpapers dated 'May 1861'. Hinrichsen E1.

Buch Erstausgabe
First edition. pp. xxiv, 309, 8 plans and one general map in two parts at the rear; bound in the publisher's original yellow pictorial biedermeier boards, slightly bumped and worn at corners; overall an excellent copy. This rare early Baedeker was translated by Professor Klein from the fifth German edition published in the same year and was the second French title to be published by Baedeker. The first was published in 1832 under the title " Voyage du Rhin de Mayence a Cologne." However this is considered to be the first true French Baedeker as much of the guide had been re-written. Baedeker had also introduced more town plans which include Cologne and Strassbourg. This copy is bound in the attractive yellow pictorial bindings known as Biedermeier, the period 1815-1848 is often (in German-speaking countries) referred to as the Biedermeier period in art and especially with reference to a style of furniture. The architectural and landscape designs on these bindings always represent the area covered in the Baedeker. They are considered to be highly collectible. Hinrichsen F2.

Second edition. Small 8vo (18 x 12 cms) pp.[4] publisher's advert, [4], 517, 2 folding maps, 12 engraved views, some pages browned, some minor spotting, both folding maps torn and split into three parts, , 8 preliminary pages including the title page detached, pages browned, pencilling inside on endpapapers; publisher's green cloth badly worn and rubbed ; a fair copy. This was the second edition of the "Rheinreise" first written by Prof. J.A.Klein in 1828. Professor Klein had died in 1831 and Karl Baedeker had acquired Roehling's ( the publisher of Klein's Rheinreise in 1828) stock in 1832 He then re-issued the modest guide-book that same year (Hinrichsen D0) with no alterations. However this edition is the true "first Baedeker" as it contains Karl Baedeker's revisions and amendments. He expanded the text and added a folding map to the rear of the volume. Despite this copy being rather well used and worn - it is still a collectible item. Hinrichsen D1.

Seventh edition. pp. lii, 344, 15 engraved views including frontispiece, 2 folding maps at rear, 9 town plans, some minor spotting on a few pages, previous owner's stamp and initials on title-page; publisher's original yellow pictorial Biedermeier boards, worn and rubbed along spine and extremities; otherwise a very good attractive copy. A good example of an early Baedeker edition. This was the last edition to have the title "Rheinreise", following editions were published as "Rheinlande".This series first started by Roehling in 1828 and then published by Baedeker in 1832 was one of the longest running series (34 editions from 1832 to 1931). Maps include Strasburg, Frankfurt and Bonn. The attractive views include Schloss zu Heidelberg and Cologne. This copy is bound in the attractive yellow Biedermeier boards used by Karl Baedeker during 1840's and early 1850's. Hinrichsen D6.

Buch Erstausgabe
4pp. manuscript letter in German dated Leipzig 3rd September 1877. This letter, written by Karl Baedeker, gives an interesting insight into the workings of the Baedeker company and the detailed attention they devoted to their guide-books. Written two years after the publication of the first (German) edition of Palestine & Syria, and in the same year as the publication of the guidebook to Egypt, the letter shows the attention to detail Baedeker put into each work. Greece, the last part of his Oriental enterprise, appeared in 1883 six years later. [English Translation]. 'Leipzig, September 3, 1882 / Dear Mr. Tuckett: / This morning I received your valuable communication for 'Greece'. I am thanking you for this in the most heartfelt manner, as well as for the proposed additional help in the new project. I give you the assurance that I will take the same care of it as I did with the two volumes Palestine & Syria and Lower Egypt, so that all the support I get in that matter will result in my thanks and goodwill. / From the two mentioned volumes you will have realised how much I am aiming at giving this Oriental enterprise a solid and scientific foundation for which I want to raise interest among eminent specialists, in order to gather the best possible material. Besides that, two of my colleagues and me, naturally each on his own, will travel in that country in order to be able to give in the book, if possible, firsthand information about each place gathered on location. When the manuscript has thus been finished I will have it typeset and send proofs to all the gentlemen who helped, asking them to revise the text again and meticulously. Please excuse me for having informed you about the production of these volumes in such detail. I felt the need to give - specially to you - a rough idea about that. / I don't know yet whether I will come to Euboea myself; nevertheless, with your permission and referring to you I will try to get interest in the handbook as well from your friend Capt. Mansell in Chalkis. / [in English:] Ever yours sincerely / Karl Baedeker. / Today at lunchtime I received a letter from Sparta written by a colleague who has been travelling since last autumn; I will have a passage from it copied. The accident, survived just by chance, is not without interest.".
