Paperback. Zustand: New. Winner of the State Prize for Poetry in Cyprus, these experimental linked poem-threads move across time, linking a young Cypriot to ancestors, contemporaries, and descendants through striking, disparate polyphony. In this bilingual collection of linked poems, Kefala creates a tapestry of motifs that transcend time and identity across early 20th Century Cyprus, 16th Century Scotland, a sailor on Christopher Columbus' ship La Pinta, and more. As the poem threads draw together, it is as if the protagonist, in his travels through the twentieth century, encounters Odysseus, Cervantes, Columbus, Rembrandt, and others, all moving in multidimensional synchronicity. In this way, the readers take part in the production of meaning by pulling the threads together, stitching together their own reading of the story. Through the reading of these threads, time remains fluid, creating a masterful declaration about the function of poetry: perhaps history is nothing more than the presence of innumerable human voices, some more and some less powerful, coexisting in an eternal present.…

Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. A thirty-year diary that became a groundbreaking literary project.Antigone Kefala has long been considered one of Australia's best kept secrets. Born in Romania in 1931, she and her family were forced to flee following the occupation by the Soviet Union, escaping first to refugee camps in Greece before moving to New Zealand and then finally Australia in 1959, where she lived until her death. As she grew into her career as a writer, she situated herself within Sydney's artistic and intellectual milieu, publishing poetry and fiction. She also kept a diary for over thirty years, portraying a world sustained by conversation and friendship, and by reflection, on books and paintings, plays and films, and literary fortune. For Kefala, Sydney Journals was a literary project, culled from decades of recordkeeping and shaped by austere and frank observations that beam with poignancy and humor. What is left is a rare document of the domestic and public life of the period, of an aging writer and her companions, and the dramatic beauty of the city and its landscapes.Intimate in its recollections, social in nature, the Journals establishes Antigone Kefala as one of literature's great diarists. Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. AntigoneKefala is one of the elders of Australian poetry, highly regarded for theintensity of her vision, yet not widely known, on account of the small numberof poems she has published, each carefully worked, each magical or menacing inits effects. Fragments is her firstcollection of new poems in almost twenty years, since the publication of New and Selected Poems in 1998, andpossibly her last. It follows her prose work Sydney Journals (Giramondo, 2008) of which one critic wrote, 'Kefala can render the music of the moment so perfectly, she leavesone almost singing with the pleasure of it'. This skill in capturing the momentis just as evident in Fragments, though the territory is often darker now, as the poet patrols the liminalspaces between life and death, alert to the energies which lie in wait there. And such energies! "Up, in the blue depth / a bird cut with its wings / thelight / such silk, that fell / and rose, heavily, / singing through the air.'AntigoneKefala has written four works of fiction, including The First Journey,The Island and Summer Visit, and four poetrycollections, The Alien, Thirsty Weather, European Notebookand Absence: New and Selected Poems as well as the non-fiction work Sydney Journals. Born in Romania ofGreek parents, she lived in Greece and New Zealand before coming to Sydney. Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. A dazzling portrait of displacement, of love, and of longing from one of Australia's most significant and overlooked women writers.Melina was born abroad and raised on the island. She asks her Aunt Niki about life before. She notices how people look at her, strain to understand her. She is full of longing for unknown things. The island occupies a liminal space between Melina's present moment and memories of the place her relatives still call home. Originally published in 1984, The Island is considered an overlooked masterpiece of Australian fiction. In prose charged with feeling and sharp with observation, Kefala captures a portrait of exile and otherness. Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. The last work by Antigone Kefala, renowned for both her poetry and her prose, one of the first writers to open Australian literature to a diversity of voices, and of the most distinctive and powerful of those voices.Late Journals completes a trilogy of works in which Kefala develops and expands her range as a memoirist, beginning with Summer Visit (2003), and followed by Sydney Journals (2008), both published by Giramondo. Kefala is not alone in writing in the journal form Beverley Farmer and Helen Garner are notable contemporaries but she is remarkable for the poetic resonance and intellectual significance she imparts to her observations. Feeling acutely her position as an outsider, because of her migrant background, she nevertheless expresses a strong sense of community with the writers, artists and thinkers who share her situation, or have influenced her work. The journals abound in portraits and tributes, reflections on art and life, and wonderful descriptions of places and landscapes, which give full reign to her imagination, and her ability to express the vitality and strangeness of the life around her.
