Hard Cover. Zustand: Good +. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: No DJ. First Edition. Green cloth with bright gilt titling on spine. Very slight wear to spine and edges. Slight marking to f. paste down. No ownership inscription. Frontis plate. Few light foxing spots. xvi, 211 pages, Press notices 4 pages. (which have ap f eared of the Poems now collected here) With regard to his Poems of Nature and Human Nature, Lord Ronaldshay, formerly Governor of Bengal, has written : " these songs deserve the patronage of the reading public on their own merits. They stir those powerful feelings of pride of race which lurk in the fibre of every true-born Englishman. The author has been successful in embodying in his poems not only the spirit of the race but of the very soil itself. The exile from home will find, in the collection, passages which bring flashing into his mind the peculiar charm of the English countryside." The Times Literary Supplement has remarked that the poems show a " laudably fervid patriotism." The British Empire Review has written of them that " apart from their high literary merit, they strike a sincere patriotic note, and march to the heroic measure of the times." In the opinion of The Gloucestershire Chronicle, " Mr. Knight Hallowes' work would seem to rank with the best." The Oxford Times remarks that, in the author's poems, " both dramatic and picturesque qualities will be found." The Arts Gazette has spoken of the Poet as having " an ear for music." The Scotsman has found his poems to be composed of " beautiful and soaring lines," which " will stir any lover of Poetry's heart." The Oxford Chronicle notes " no little technical mastery " in the poems" while The Cheltenham Looker On has spoken of them as " beautiful in their inspiration, and in the poetic feeling which they display." Of the Poems of Human Nature published in this volume, which poems went into a second edition, The Simla Times has written " the style is vigorous, and there are some fine dramatic passages."
