Ukiyoe artists delighted to focus on moments such as this, infused with eroticism by the inadvertent exposure of bare limbs. Yet, only rarely has an ukiyoe designer succeeded in blending eroticism into art with such moderation as Kiyonaga achieves in this print. He has obtained a pictorial effect especially large for the hashirae format by depicting only the fore part of the full-length figure, and by emphasizing the beautiful lines of the girl's wind-bent posture, which are felicitously repeated in the yielding of the wisteria. Text in Japanese and English. - Hashirae - (Important Art Object) Kiyonaga never forgot that he was the head of the fourth generation of the Torii family and thus belonged to a line of illustrious painters and print designers for the Kabuki theatre. He produced many theatrical playbills and actor prints. But Kiyonaga was also a man of poetic nature who wrote both comic kyoka verse and the more lyric haiku poetry. The verse in the upper area of this pillar print reads: Before the stately beauty Spreads the cool river, Delightfully refreshing Like towering Mt. Fuji. This sentiment is echoed in the print design of a beauty enjoying the cool on the bank of the Sumida River. A certain collector once remarked that Kiyonaga's pictures fitted perfectly into the Japanese tokonoma with its requirement for art with a strong seasonal quality.
