In den Basler Zeitungen entbrannten heftige Leserbriefschlachten, wobei die bürgerlichen Blätter unisono negativ und die linken Medien durchweg positiv reagierten. Der Verein für Frauenstimmrecht organisierte eine Sympathiekundgebung, während die meisten Basler Parlamentarier die Lehrerinnen scharf kritisierten; ihr stärkster Verteidiger war der Ehemann einer der Streikführerinnen. Diese Ereignisse fanden 14 Jahre nach dem Kriegsende und 12 Jahre vor dem Durchbruch des Frauenstimmrechts 1971 statt.
