Buch
Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Engdon, David (illustrator). Silver titled blue cloth with the logo of two crossed flags 14x22cm. Printed by Alfred H. Cooper and Sons, London. (5), 44pp including several full-page blue and black cartoons by David Engdon. Covers about very good, faded to the spine with some spotting, interiors fine. Undated, but estimated c1951 based on the binding, which matches KOC's "Handbook of Kuwaiti Arabic" (1951). This would coincide with the opening of the KOC Hospital at Ahmadi in 1950, during a period of major new discoveries and operational growth. The author is not named, but the Introduction credits "many sources of information, advice, and criticism; and in particular to Colonel and Mrs Dickson for much valuable information about local snakes and sea pests". The book was prepared for non-Kuwaiti staff, especially those working outside, and women with families present: "the subject has deliberately been put bluntly, in the belief that if you are prepared for the worst, you will be less likely to meet it". Chapters I and II define factors, counter-measures and control. Primary factors include the sun, dust and sand, water, endemic diseases, and pests. Secondary include the individual's own character, habits, temperament, kitchen, diet and clothing. Chapter III deals with child care, and IV with inoculations (advised by the Travel Office, and administered by KOC Hospital). Engdon's cartoons emphasise some of the key messages. One facing the Contents page shows a pith-helmeted figure confidently on his way, holding a suitcase and copy of this book, captioned "Knows what to expect in Kuwait". Very rare, with OCLC recording 4 locations only (NYU Abu Dhabi, NYU, Oklahoma University, Keio University); not recorded on Jisc. This also featured in an article in the Arab Times titled "A look at health history in old Kuwait", Farkas al Rashoud, 27 April 2020.

[2], 22 pp.Unrecorded information guide for (new) employees of the Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) who would be residing in Al Ahmadi, headquarters of the Company. The Kuwait Oil Company was founded in 1934, a joint venture between the British Anglo-Persian Oil Company and the American company Gulf Oil. In the same year, the sheik of Kuwait, Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah (reigned 1921-1950) granted them rights to the oil concession, which they were to retain until 1975. The first oil was discovered in 1938 in Burgan field, followed by discoveries in Magwa in 1951, Al Ahmadi in 1952, and many more regions. In 1946 the first commercial shipment took place. Because the initial development of the KOC coincided with the end of the British Raj in India, many British and Indian people in its service were transferred to Kuwait, in particular to Al Ahmadi. Al Ahmadi was set up to house these workers. This unrecorded guide is quite rare, especially because it seems to be a quite cheaply produced and ephemeral document which was issued only in small numbers for in-house circulation. At some places very slightly frayed and creases along the edges and corners, staple a little rusted, leaves slightly toned, some leaves a little cut short at the foot (with no loss except for some of the catch-words, but overall in remarkably good condition. A rare and unrecorded guide for employees of the Kuwait Oil Company in Ahmadi.

Buch
Soft cover. Zustand: Good. Original b/w printed wraps 21x28cm. 80pp English and 84pp Arabic text, illustrated throughout with b/w photos, drawings and maps, with related advertisements. Good, creased, with tears and minor loss along spine. Extremely rare, with Worldcat recording 4 holdings of an English language edition containing 74 leaves (AUC, Harvard, Exxon Mobil, Stanford), and the Anglo-Arab edition without listing any locations. This addresses the Arab League's goal to unify Arab oil policy, following on from its treaty on economic and military cooperation (1950), and the creation of its Economic Council. Its Petroleum Committee first met in 1952 and 1953 to discuss petroleum affairs and the Israel boycott. In 1954 the League upgraded this Committee to a Permanent Petroleum Bureau, headed by the Iraqi engineer Mohammed Salman. In 1955 and during 1957-58 Salman toured extensively, visiting Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Libya, Bahrain, Qatar and Kuwait, consulting on and drumming up support for the unified policy. In 1959 his Bureau was renamed the Petroleum Affairs Department (reference: Mohamed Salman, The Role of the League of Arab States in Petroleum Affairs, Cairo: League of Arab States, 1959). The League formed the Arab Petroleum Congress with Salman as Secretary General, as a forum to bring about policy unification among its members. It hosted this first Congress and Exhibition in Cairo for all Arab States and Emirates, the institutions and companies operating in those countries, and Iran and Venezuela. Among the main outputs was a substantial amount of technical papers on exploration, transport, refining, marketing, economics, law and policy. This event also laid the foundations for OPEC, through meetings at the Maadi Yacht Club attended by oil ministers Abdullah Tariki from Saudi Arabia, Juan Pablo Perez Alfonzo from Venezuela, among others, facilitated by the influential journalist Wanda Jablonski. This introductory document opens with statements by Salman, and the Arab League's Secretary General, El Sayed Abd El Khalek Hassouna. Hassouna describes the rationale for the Congress. Salman explains the strategic importance of oil and international involvement: "The problem which faces the Arab Nations which own the oil is that they are underdeveloped and they export their treasure". Taking a long view, he argues the need to develop local petroleum industry and reduce dependence on crude oil revenues alone. To achieve this "A harmonious petroleum general policy for all the Arab Nations must be planned" (pp4-5). There are details about Congress and Exhibition staff, and a list of the different petroleum authorities, companies, and enterprises by country, for Iraq, Saudi Arabia, UAR, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Yemen. The rest of the document is dedicated to sections of varying coverage and detail for some of the above named countries, suggesting Salman was only partially successful in obtaining timely information in advance. Thus the section on Iraq is relatively very brief, covering only the state administration, while host country Egypt's is highly detailed. The Saudi section not only describes Aramco's oil activities, but provides information about its employees, training, primary schools, scholarships, home loans, and medical programme, which would have been of great interest to Salman et al. The Kuwait section describes the history, activities and prospects of the Kuwait Oil Company, and includes brief profiles of the American Independent Oil Company and Arabian Oil Company. Other contributors include Phillips, Aero Service Corporation, C. Deilmann Bergbau, Deutz, and others describing or advertising their services. One of the maps shows Arabian oilfields. The photos include portraits of Salman and Hassouna, and predominantly oil company personnel, activities and installations.
