Zustand: Fine. An excellent clear copy with seventeen well appointed engravings. Some slight wear on the top of the front and back covers; the spine is in very good condition. This book arose from a series of lectures delivered before the Board of Agriculture between the years 1802 and 1812 and represents the beginning of scientific agriculture and the first serious attempt to apply chemistry t agriculture. Davy deals with soils and their analysis, the germination of seeds, manures of vegetable and animal origin, the improvement of lands by burning, and irrigation. He discusses the extraction of sugar(s) from various plants, including beet, maple, and grape. The original edition was published in 1813 and was the only definitive work on agricultural chemistry for several decades. Early editions are quite rare and this edition appeared shortly after Davy's death (1829) from a stroke. The book also has an Appendix that describes the results of experiments on the produce and nutritive qualities of different grasses and other plants used as animal fodder.
