Cette édition est au moins aussi rare que l'édition originale de Paris qui portait sur le titre le nom de son auteur : Dupuy. Il s'agit d'une imitation des Caractères de la Bruyère et des Maximes du duc de La Rochefoucauld. D'ailleurs ce petit volume est dédié au fils de l'auteur des célèbres Maximes parues initialement en 1665 (avec des éditions augmentées jusqu'en 1693). On ne sait quasiment rien de la vie de l'auteur sauf ce qu'il aura bien voulu nous dire dans les préfaces de ses ouvrages. Qualifié d'écuyer dans le privilège du roi du 29 juillet 1693 relatif aux Caractères, pensées, maximes et sentiments (Paris, N. de Burre, 1693), il demeure alors rue des Petis-Augustins, vis-à-vis la petite rue des Marets Faubourg Saint-Germain à Paris. On sait qu'il sert l'état "en des rencontres importantes". On le sait secrétaire au traité de la paix de Ryswick (1697), fonction qu'il rappelle en tête de ses ouvrages. En 1711 il habite rue de l'Université, chez Monsieur du Garde. En décembre 1712 il se rend en Angleterre et s'y trouve encore en 1714. Il voyage également en Hollande. En 1716, il loge à l'Hôtel d'Allemagne, grande rue du Four, Faubourg Saint-Germain à Paris. On perd ensuite sa trace sans rien savoir de ce q'il est advenu de lui. Il est apparemment apparenté à Pierre et Jacques Dupuy, célèbres bibliothécaires du Roi, fils de Claude Dupuy qui était Conseiller au Parlement. On a de lui un ouvrage qui semble être le dernier, intitulé : Instructions d'un père à sa fille, tirées de l'Ecriture Sainte (Paris, chez la Veuve Etienne, 1730). Il écrit le même ouvrage pour instruire son fils. "Que de combats il faut donner pour pratiquer la vertu ! Ce nombre presque infini d'amusements qui se présentent dans le monde , & qui peuvent toujours avoir les grâces de la nouveauté, sont quelque chose de bien redoutable. Qui est-ce qui y résiste ?" (Pensée XXXIV) Ce petit volume rare se divise en plusieurs sections : on y trouve 156 Caractères, 18 Pensées diverses, 50 Pensées morales et chrétiennes, 107 Maximes et Sentiments, et un entretien de Philemon et d'Euthyme sur deux personnes (pp. 180-208 et fin). Provenance : exemplaire provenant de la bibliothèque du bibliophile Gustave Mouravit (1840-1920), avec son petit cachet à l'encre violette sur la page de titre (et répété en haut d'une page), et une petite note manuscrite sur le feuillet de garde de la reliure (qui prouve que ce volume a été relié pour lui sur ses directives par Hardy-Mennil). This is an especially desirable copy of a work containing founding documents of the American republic in French, an important language for the international community, the book apparently being a gift--as indicated on the title page--from the translator. The volume represents a collaboration between compiler Benjamin Franklin, the man the U.S. State Department considers "America's first diplomat," and translator Louis Alexandre de La Rochefoucauld (1743-92), an important French aristocrat who was an enthusiastic supporter of the American Revolution. The book contains the state constitutions of the original 13 states, the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation (precursor to the U.S. Constition), and the treaties between the United States and France, the Low Countries, and Sweden. Printer, polymath, and Founding Father Franklin (1706-90) explained the motivation behind this work to Thomas Mifflin, president of the Confederation Congress, in a letter of 25 December 1783: "The extravagant Misrepresentations of our Political State, in foreign Countries, made it appear necessary to give them better Information, which I thought could not be more effectually and authentically done than by publishing a Translation into French, now the most general Language in Europe, of the Book of Constitutions which had been printed by Order of Congress. This I accordingly got well done. It has been well taken, and has afforded [a] Matter of Surprise to many, who had conceived mean Ideas of the State of Civilization in America, and could not have expected so much political Knowledge and Sagacity had existed in our Wilderness. Voltaire drew on La Rochefoucauld's views when writing "Candide," and the "Maximes" impacted the works of French writers from Stendhal to André Gide, as well as philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche and English novelist Thomas Hardy. The duke's worldview would have resonated with former owner William Grenfell, Baron Desborough (1855-1945), a sportsman and indefatigable public servant who was one of the founding members of The Souls (fl. 1886-1900), an elite group of friends whose social gatherings for intellectual discussions were perhaps Victorian London's closest approximation of a Parisian salon. Although other members included prominent and accomplished men and women, it was the parties given by Grenfell's wife and fellow Soul Ettie that attracted guests like Vita Sackville-West, H. G. Wells, Edith Wharton, Oscar Wilde, Edward VII (when Prince of Wales), and Winston Churchill. One can easily imagine one of the Souls presenting this volume to the Grenfells for Christmas in 1895. By one of the great London workshops, the binding here is a modified example of the fanfare style of decoration popular in France from the late 16th to mid-17th century. The main features of this style, in Glaister's words, "are interlacing ribbons" that form "compartments of various shapes, with emphasis given to a central compartment." Ornaments made with small hand tools "fill all the compartments except the central one and almost completely cover the sides." The fanfare style is perhaps most frequently associated with the work of Nicolas and Clovis Eve, court binders and booksellers to successive kings of France from about 1578 to 1634. It is generally believed that the term "fanfare" actually took its name from an early 17th century music book (the title of which begins with the word "fanfare") acquired by the bibliophile Charles Nodier in 1829. The book was bound for Nodier by the famous Parisian binder Joseph Thouvenin, using an appropriately retrospective design in imitation of the Eves' style, which from that point forward came to be known as "fanfare." The Zaehnsdorf bindery produced a number of bindings in this genre with their usual expertise. Hungarian-born Joseph Zaehnsdorf (1816-86) served his apprenticeship in Stuttgart, worked at a number of European locations as a journeyman, and then settled in London, where he was hired first by Westley and then by Mackenzie before opening his own workshop in 1842. His son and namesake took over the business at 33, when the senior Joseph died, and the firm flourished under the son's leadership, becoming a leading West End bindery. Over the years, Zaehnsdorf employed a considerable number of distinguished binders, including the Frenchman Louis Genth (who was chief finisher from 1859-84), and trained a number of others, including Roger de Coverly and Sarah Prideaux. A family-run business until 1947, the Zaehnsdorf bindery continued to produce consistently attractive, tasteful, and innovative designs executed with unfailing skill. It is generally understood that the Zaehnsdorf firm reserved the use of its oval stamp showing a binder at work for their finest bindings, including those entered in exhibitions.…
