Paris, 1820. A fine lithograph (30.0 x 21.5 cm). = The French priest René-Just Haüy was the most important mineralogist and crystallographer of the 18th century. The plate caption reads: Institut Royal de France, Acad. des Sciences (Minéralogie), Chev. de la Légion d'Honneur. The artist, Julien-Léopold "Jules" Boilly (1796 -1874), published both an "Iconographie de l'Institut Royal de France" (1820-1821) and an "Album de 73 Portraits-Changés Aquarelles des Membres de I Institute" (1820). Both are very rare. This fine engraving was taken from the first work. Light, even foxing throughout.
Paris, Bachelier, 1821. Bound in 2 fine contemp. full calf, spines richly gilt and with tome-and titlelabels with gilt lettering. Edges gilt and gilt borders on covers. A stamp on htitles. (4),510"(4),452,(2) pp. and 19 large folded engraved plates. A fain dampstain to marghins of the last 25 leaves and plates in volume 2.(more to the last 4 plates just reaching image). Haüy is well known for his importent works in mineralogy. Napoleon had nominated Haüy an honorary canon of Notre Dame, in 1803 he ordered him to write a textbook of physics for the newly instituted lycées. This book was outstanding for its clear, methodological expositionof physics, although mathemaical treatment of problems was lacking. His "Traite de Physique" brought him appointment to the Legion of Hoor in 1803.

8vo, pp. xxvii, (v), 238, 4 folding plates. Original wrappers, new paper spine with printed paper label, uncut. Dampstain on last eight leaves of the prelims, and minor dampstain in upper corner of final few leaves and plates. Signature in upper corner of title of an officer in the French corps of engineers. FIRST EDITION. Franz Aepinus published in 1758 ?one of the most original and important books in the history of electricity. It is the first reasoned, fruitful exposition of electrical phenomena based on action-at-a-distance? (DSB). It is extremely rare (and always has been ? Beccaria had not seen a copy by 1772), and difficult to read, but ?most of its content became easily available in 1780 [i.e. 1787] in the excellent nonmathematical epitome composed by R.J. Haüy, who managed to preserve the spirit and clarity of the original? (DSB). Haüy also described pyro-electricity, and incorporated the recent results of Coulomb, including his torsion balance to establish the laws of electric and magnetic attraction. Wheeler Gift 541. Mottelay pp. 286?287. Ekelöf 581. Neville I, p. 602. Sinkankas 2808.
Paris, Courcier, 1817. Contemp. hcalf. Richly gilt spine. Tome-and titlelabels with gilt lettering. An old repair to spine at upper compartment. Some small cracks to leather at spine. Spine a bit rubbed. XVI,XXII,253 pp. and 3 large folded engraved plates with many figs. showing crystal forms and Nicholson's hydrometer. Some scattered brownspots, mainly at margins. A wide-margined copy. Scarce first edition of Haüys landmark work on the crystallography of gemstones. Haüy had already in 1784 demonstrated the constancy of aspects of the geometric form of the individual crystals and hereby he laid the foundation stones of the science of Crystallography in general. In the offered work he applies his crystal-discoveries of the constancy of angles to the cutting of gems, thus providing us with the first handbook to show how to determine different kinds of gemstones, and he thereby also founded the science of Gemology. "He hypothesized that each crystal was built up of successive additions of what we now call a "unit cell" to form - in the absence of external inteference - a simple geometric shape with constant angles and with sides trhat could be related by simple integral ratios. he maintained that an identity of difference in crystalline form implied an identity or difference in chemical composition. This was the beginning of the science of crystallograpy, which was to attain maturity over a century later with the development of X-ray techniques by Laue and Bragg."(Asimov).

8vo, pp. xvi, xxii, 253, 16 (inserted adverts dated 12 April 1855), 3 folding engraved plates by Cloquet. Half-title. Pink wrappers from printer?s waste dated 1861, lettered on spine in manuscript, uncut. Paper slightly browned or foxed, wrappers a little dust-soiled. FIRST EDITION of ?the first determinative gemology worthy of that name? (Sinkankas). Haüy is considered the founder of the science of crystallography. In this book, which was principally intended for collectors of precious stones, he gives a survey of the physical characteristics of cut gems, followed by tables showing the properties of the different precious stones. An important section (pp. 113?185) deals with pyro-electricity ? Haüy was the first to relate crystal structures to electrical properties. ?In brief, what Haüy accomplished here was to provide the first handbook for the practical determination of gemstone species by observing and/or measuring properties? A work of fundamental importance in the science of gemology and marking the transition from a purely descriptive method to accurate determination of properties and applying them to identification? (Sinkankas 2811, from a long descriptive note on the book).
