The essence of Galen in one volume - this was the ambition of the ren…owned Spanish physician and botanist, Andr? s de Laguna. The Epitome is not a collection of excerpts, but presents shortened, coherent Latin versions of every Galenic treatise. Galen's works are followed by a short treatise on medical weights and measures; a life of Galen; notes on the translations used, all three by Laguna himself and preceded by their own dedications; and an index comprising over 10,000 entries. In the main Galen's works are arranged in four sections dedicated to introductory and anatomical writings, dietetics and diagnostics, nosology and therapy, and pharmacology respectively. Galen was essential reading for every physician and the book's raison d'??tre is to render his work more accessible and reader-friendly, and a contemporary suggested Laguna had rendered the medical community "a highly useful service". Readers agreed, and the Epitome (parts of which first appeared in 1548) was republished at least four times, in 1553, 1571, 1604 and 1643. Most buyers were presumably practicing doctors rather than students.
