Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good-. Illustrated by Lambert, Saul [cover] (illustrator). Book Club (BCE/BOMC). Spine somewhat slanted, edgewear/chipping along bottom, ex-library with usual stamps. DJ in protective wrap taped to boards, some edgewear along bottom. Text has spots on a few pages. "It was the middle of a sunny May morning when the old man, thin and shabby, made his way up the Heimrichs' driveway.and suddenly collapsed on the gravel. He was Old Tom, self-appointed handyman for the community of Van Brunt, New York, and someone had shot him. The question was, why would anyone care enough about this harmless eccentric, the roving gardener, to want to kill him? Is there more to Old Tom than a look at his unkempt person and ramshackle living quarters would indicate? Why would a murderer choose to shoot him in broad daylight in, of all places, the driveway of Captain Merton Heimrich of the New York State police?"; Ex-Library; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. Saul Lambert (illustrator). 1st Edition. Well, I don't know, this is all very complicated and I'm not sure I follow it! There was a book by Leon Garfield called "Mister Corbett's Ghost" which was published in America by Pantheon in 1968 and by Longman in the U.K. in 1969. It contained the title story and two others: "Vaarlem and Tripp" and "The Simpleton". Then, again in 1969, comes this book from Pantheon in which the title story is changed, but the other two stories are the same as the other collection, and this one doesn't appear to have a U.K. edition although "The Restless Ghost" introduced the characters Bostock and Harris who go on to feature in their own book called, in the U.K. at least, "Bostock and Harris" but which was re-titled "The Night of the Comet" in the U.S. edition. And "The Restless Ghost" is about the ghost of a drummer boy who doesn't seem to be connected with the title character of Leon Garfield's other 1969 book from Pantheon, "The Drummer Boy". Anyway, leaving all that aside, what we have in this current volume are the three excellent stories mentioned, each "touched with the macabre", and the atmospheric, full page, illustrations of Saul Lambert. There is an unusual bookplate on the front pastedown of this copy, otherwise it is near fine in a very good dust jacket, price-clipped and slightly worn and nicked at extremities with some internal tape strengthening. MC.
