Januar 1832 in Paris; 30. April 1883 ebenda) war ein französischer Maler. Er gilt als einer der Wegbereiter der modernen Malerei. Die spanische Malerei blieb für Manet bis zu seinem Spätwerk eine dauernde Inspirationsquelle. Hierbei nahm Diego Velázquez eine zentrale Rolle ein, aber auch Motive von Francisco de Goya finden sich wiederholt als Vorbilder in Manets Werk; gelegentlich ist der Einfluss von El Greco zu spüren.
