Peter, dopo la morte dello zio Ben, decide di mettere i suoi poteri al servizio dell'umanità e diventa il supereroe noto come Spider-Man. Nel cast, oltre a Maguire, sono presenti Willem Dafoe, Kirsten Dunst e James Franco, rispettivamente nei ruoli di Norman Osborn, Mary Jane Watson ed Harry Osborn. Considerato tra i migliori film del genere supereroistico, Spider-Man uscì nelle sale negli Stati Uniti il 3 maggio 2002 con anteprima nazionale svolta il 1º maggio al Tribeca Film Festival, mentre nelle sale italiane il film uscì il 7 giugno 2002, e divenne un successo sia di pubblico che di critica. Con 821 708 551$ in tutto il mondo, il film batté diversi record, diventando il 3° film più visto nel 2002 (dietro a Harry Potter e la camera dei segreti e Il Signore degli Anelli - Le due torri) e, alla sua uscita, il cinefumetto con il più alto incasso globale. Il successo del film, portò il regista Sam Raimi a realizzare due seguiti, Spider-Man 2 nel 2004 e Spider-Man 3 nel 2007. Nel 2012, la Columbia Pictures, la stessa casa di produzione del film, distribuì nei cinema The Amazing Spider-Man, un reboot della saga cinematografica slegato dalla precedente trilogia diretta da Raimi.[1][2] Trama l giovane Peter Parker vive nei sobborghi di New York con gli anziani zii, studia al liceo, è innamorato della bella Mary Jane Watson, ha l'hobby della fotografia ed è molto timido. Un giorno, durante una gita di classe Peter viene morso da un ragno geneticamente modificato. Presto scopre di essere capace di produrre uno strano tessuto simile a una ragnatela dai polsi e nota che i suoi riflessi si sono incredibilmente potenziati, inoltre scopre di potersi arrampicare sui muri come un ragno ed essere in grado di percepire il pericolo prima che accada. Intanto, Norman Osborn, scienziato fondatore della OSCORP nonché padre di Harry, il migliore amico di Peter, sta cercando di rispettare i termini stabiliti con l'esercito e non perdere il contratto col Generale Slocum a favore di una compagnia rivale. Decide così di sottoporsi all'Incrementatore di prestazioni, un gas che incrementa le capacità fisiche, ma ancora in fase sperimentale. L'esito del test è drammatico e il siero potenzia la fisicità di Norman ma lo fa anche impazzire, facendogli uccidere Mendel Stromm, suo assistente. Con i suoi nuovi poteri, Peter, ignorando il consiglio dello zio Ben circa il fatto che "da un grande potere derivano grandi responsabilità", decide di andare ad un incontro di wrestling per vincere un po' di soldi da usare per comprarsi una macchina e fare bella figura con Mary Jane, ma vinto l'incontro il promotore gli dà solo una misera parte. Improvvisamente un ladro rapina il promotore e Peter decide di non fermarlo per vendicarsi del misero pagamento. Presto però Peter si pentirà di non aver fatto la cosa giusta: scopre che il rapinatore ha ucciso lo zio Ben per rubargli la macchina. Furioso, Peter insegue il rapinatore in cima a un palazzo abbandonato e l'uomo muore cadendo da una finestra. Dopo il diploma, Peter decide di usare i suoi poteri da ragno per combattere il crimine. Per fare ciò, Peter si crea un'identità da supereroe e si rende famoso fra i cittadini di New York con il nome di Spider-Man. L'unico cittadino a nutrire rabbia e risentimento per l'eroe è J. Jonah Jameson, il burbero editore del quotidiano Daily Bugle, il quale assume Peter come fotografo, essendo l'unico capace di fornirgli delle fotografie del supereroe. Nel frattempo anche Norman Osborn si crea un alter ego: Goblin, usando un'armatura verde e una maschera dai lineamenti da folletto e un razzo aliante sviluppati nei suoi laboratori. In seguito Norman scopre che i suoi colleghi intendono cacciarlo per vendere la OSCORP, così, durante la manifestazione della Festa dell'Unità Mondiale a Times Square, egli si abbandona di nuovo al suo lato malvagio e li uccide brutalmente lanciando una bomba-zucca sulla balconata dove tutti sono riuniti. In questa occasione si scontra per la prima volta con Spider-Man, il quale riesce a farlo allontanare danneggiando il motore dell'aliante, riuscendo anche a salvare Mary Jane dal supercriminale. In seguito, dopo aver fatto irruzione nel Bugle e minacciato Jameson, invita Spider-Man a schierarsi dalla sua parte per tenere in pugno l'intera città, ma l'eroe rifiuta. Durante la cena del ringraziamento tra i Parker e gli Osborn, Norman deduce che Peter Parker è Spider-Man, quindi la sera si rimette i panni di Goblin e irrompe in casa di zia May, provocandoli uno shock e facendola finire in ospedale. Mentre assistono la signora Parker, Mary Jane confida a Peter di avere una cotta per Spider-Man, che l'ha salvata in diverse occasioni, quindi, sapendo che Peter è noto per essere il "fotografo ufficiale" dell'Uomo Ragno, gli domanda se l'eroe ha mai chiesto di lei. Harry, che era venuto per visitare May, vede Peter insieme a Mary Jane, ed essendo lui innamorato di lei, decide di lasciarli pur di non rompere l'amicizia con Peter. Devastato, Harry torna alla sua villa e si confida con Norman dicendogli che Peter Parker ama Mary Jane. Facendo questa affermazione, Harry ha involontariamente rivelato a Goblin l'unico punto debole di Spider-Man, e cioè l'amore che prova per la ragazza. Durante la notte Goblin rapisce Mary Jane e la porta sul ponte East River dove la sporge pericolosamente sul vuoto tenendo in ostaggio anche una funivia piena di bambini. Quando Spider-Man giunge sul posto, Goblin pone l'eroe davanti a una scelta: la vita dei bambini o quella di Mary Jane, dopodiché molla entrambi gli ostaggi. Nonostante ciò, Spider-Man compie un'azione eroica e riesce a salvare sia Mary Jane sia la funivia posandoli su un battello.
