In den WarenkorbLeather. Zustand: Fine. John Leech; H.K. Browne; W.T. Maud (illustrator). The selected works of noted English author Robert Smith Surtees, sumptuously bound in Bayntun binding. This six volume library set collects the selected works of celebrated novelist Robert Smith Surtees which achieved praise for their vigorous and engaging style. Although these works were not particularly popular when they were originally published, due to the comic, satiric and unsentimental style of Surtees' writing which clashed with the Victorian ideals of moralistic literature, these colloquial and discursive novels have outlasted many other similar works of the time. Incorporating the illustrations of John Leech, the artists' work was often complimented for elevating Surtees' writing, and provided Leech with an opportunity to do some of his best work. The set collects the following works: 'Handley Cross', 'Hawbuck Grange', 'Mr Sponge's Sporting Tour', 'Ask Mamma', 'Plain Or Ringlets?', and 'Mr Romford's Hounds'.With monochrome vignette illustrations and coloured plates in all volumes, collated complete. The volumes in this set are all undated, dated from copac.A master of comic characters and observation, Robert Smith Surtees and his work is fondly remembered, presented here in an attractively bound library set. Rebound in attractive red half morocco with gilt stamped decoration to the spine, with Bayntun binders stamp to the front free end paper. Externally, very smart, with only very minor marks. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are generally bright and clean, with only some occasional minor handling marks, and some off-setting to the front and rear free end papers as expected. A few of the tissue guards to the coloured plates have minor tears. Fine. book.
