Hardcover. Zustand: Like New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Like new. First edition. Bollingen Series LX 5, Princeton University Press, 1982. In 2 volumes: Text [435 pages] and Plates, I-LX. The Samothrace Temple Complex, known as the Sanctuary of the Great Gods is one of the principal Pan-Hellenic religious sanctuaries. It was celebrated throughout Ancient Greece as the site of Mystery religion, and famous initiates, including the historian Herodotus, one of very few authors to have left behind a few clues to the nature of the mysteries. The Temenos is its sanctum. Phyllis Williams Lehmann first visited Samothrace in 1938, as a doctoral student on the New York University Institute of Fine Arts team led by professor Karl Leo Heinrich Lehmann. She was awarded her PhD in 1943 and married Lehmann the following year. She completed this work after his death in 1960.
